Total Refusal | Total Refusal

Total Refusal is a pseudo-Marxist media guerrilla collective. We appropriate mainstream video games to use their environments and resources to tell new stories and open new perspectives, removed from the tropes of profit-driven marketing logics. Our collective Total Refusal appropriates and upcycles contemporary video games and writes about games and politics. Our collective's themes are informed by critical game studies and social theory in an attempt to promote and popularize a counter-hegemonic left. We also draw inspiration from gaming communities to practice "agitainment" - a synthesis of agitation and entertainment. By injecting post-Marxist analysis into the glossy world of video games, we aim to provide an accessible yet critical engagement with mass media and its underlying ideological algorithms. Our work includes films, video art, live in-game performances, writing, and educational initiatives. We call our films "machinifestos" - political manifestos expressed through machinima. Bridging the worlds of academia, art, film, and gaming, Total Refusal catalyzes a Marxist critique of society through playful, analytical, and humorous practices to radicalize its audience. Since its founding in 2018, our collective work has received 65 awards and honorable mentions - such as the European Film Award, the Best Short Direction Award at the Locarno Film Festival, the Diagonale Film Award for Best Documentary Short, the Contemporary Visual Arts Award of Styria, and the Vimeo Staff Pick Award. Total Refusals' work has been screened at over 250 film and art festivals, including the Berlinale, Doc Fortnight at MOMA New York, and the Locarno Film Festival, and has been exhibited in venues as diverse as the Architecture Biennale Venice 2021, MOMA NY, HEK Basel, and Ars Electronica Linz.
