In his travelogue "American Notes" he documented typical newspaper adverts of the time. I attach a selection. I can't think of anything more vile than the cruelty of such violence and mutilation, other than the #Trump Gov trying to suppress the knowledge that this was deemed acceptable behaviour. #slavery #SlaveryHistory
