πŸŒ•πŸ”΄ The Blood Moon Eclipse is happening Tuesday morning β€” good luck seeing it from the East Coast!

A total lunar eclipse is turning the Moon a stunning deep red tomorrow morning, with 58 minutes of totality. For those of us in Westport, CT and along the East Coast, the Moon rises already deep in totality... straight into clouds.

Total Lunar Eclipse Week!

On March 3, the full Moon slips into Earth’s shadow, glowing copper-red in a total lunar eclipse. No telescope needed β€” just clearer skies than the rain/snow currently threatening. Of course.

When it clears: Jupiter shines after sunset, Orion and M42 dazzle, and planetary pairings grace the evening sky.

This Week’s Sky at a Glance (Feb 20–March 1)

Forecast for us in New England: mostly β€œmeh.” Clouds rule the week, but if you catch a break, look up. Jupiter is blazing high after sunset. Saturn sets early. Orion dominates the evening with Taurus and the Pleiades nearby.

Late winter skies are prime deep-sky seasonβ€”grab it if you can.

🌌 What’s Up This Week (Feb 13–22):
Catch Venus & Mercury low in the west after sunset β€” binoculars help. Saturn lingers nearby. πŸŒ™ On Feb 18, a thin crescent Moon pairs with Mercury.

After dark, Orion dominates the south, with Sirius blazing below. Great winter sky viewing all week. πŸ”

This week, if you can find a clear patch of sky, Orion will be at its highest in the south around 8 p.m. The Aldebaran-Jupiter-Pleiades triangle will form a perfect right triangle throughout the week and next. It's also a great time to observe the zodiacal light. https://ow.ly/i3ei50V0xtQ

Tonight 1/17, after sunset, see Saturn and bright Venus cuddle in the cold Southwest. The Parade of Planets continue with second brightest planet Jupiter sailing above with rusty red Mars slowly retrograding westward in Gemini just past opposition, moving across the heavens tonight! https://ow.ly/ObuB50UIHW9

THIS WEEK - Winter begins at 4:20 am Saturday, Jupiter's moon Io pops out of the planet's shadow Wednesday and the moons have a wacky alignment next Saturday, Venus shines in the southwest at dusk, Mercury has great viewing before sunrise, Mars brightens below Castor and Pollux and there's a new Moon on the 30th. THIS WEEK'S SKY: Last chance to see Mercury - lower right of Venus about 45 minutes after sunset. Venus becomes winters "evening star" as it brightens. The thin waning crescent Moon occults Spica disappearing at 5:36 a.m. EST and reappears from behind the dark limb at 6:51 a.m. EST. It's a month of interesting occultations! The first occurs on the night of Nov. 15-16 when the Full Moon will hide anywhere from a few to all of the brightest members of the Pleiades cluster for observers across the U.S. However, it's just past a full moon and it will make seeing the Pleiades difficult. Spica is easy to see when it gets gobbled up on the 27th. https://skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-news/observing-news/watch-the-moon-occult-the-pleiades-spica-too/

The Taurids continue this week, Mercury makes an appearance under bright Venus after sunset, and the First-quarter Moon sits in Capricornus tonight. Also this evening, Jupiter's moon Io has its shadow cross the planet's face from 8:51 to 11:03 p.m. EST, followed by Io itself at 9:34 p.m. with the Great Red Spot transiting at 10:19 p.m. Sunday the moon cozies up to Saturn and actually occults the planet if you're south of Florida. The Full Beaver Moon is next Friday. See your Universe! https://skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-news/observing-news/this-weeks-sky-at-a-glance-november-8-17/
