Got the blue tongue out of his hide to check on him as I hadn't seen him since he shed, and I wanted to make sure he was OK and didn't have any stuck scales anywhere.

I wasn't sure if he'd be hungry as we're getting into the time of year where he might start brumating and go off his food for a couple of months, so rather than make up a dish of food for him I just offered him dog food still in the tray. It's fair to say he was indeed hungry!

The scaly sausage has been hiding more or less continually for the last couple of weeks. I thought he might be going into brumation a touch early due to the cool nights we had before it was raining all the time, but it seems he was instead preparing to shed his skin. He finally emerged this evening and spent a while rubbing himself on things to get the old skin off and, as usual, eating most of it. There were a few scraps left though, like this bit from his tail.

I've seen this little skink a few times recently scurrying across our patio.

This morning I was standing still watering one corner of the garden when they snuck out from somewhere, approached to the edge of the spray from the hose, and spent a minute having a good drink from the water where it splashed on the concrete.

The long saga of bureaucratic mismanagement that was the renewal of my Companion Native Animal Keeper licence has finally come to a conclusion.

13 1/2 weeks after submitting my renewal application to the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service I have now received my new licence. That means that this scaly sausage is legit again, after being held on an expired licence for the past 12 1/2 weeks through no fault of my own.

As noted up thread these types of licences used to be granted automatically within minutes, but then the NSW goverment decided that all animal licence applications needed to be reviewed, but didn't give the NPWS Wildlife Licencing Team the necessary resources to do it. The inevitable result has been months long backlogs of applications awaiting manual processing.

Lizard spotlight: Northern Many-lined Skink, Plestiodon multivirgatus multivirgatus!
This subspecies of many-lined is an inhabitant of the northwestern Great Plains from southern South Dakota and Nebraska west into Wyoming and Colorado east of the Rockies; it’s separated from the other subspecies by the Arkansas River Valley and eastern Rockies in southern Colorado. In pockets they can be common, ranging up to almost 6,000 feet in elevation and frequenting sandy scrubland, open forests, and riparian corridors. Most of their life is spent underground or under cover, coming out on the surface more when it’s cooler and moist, hunting pretty much any palatable arthropod they can overpower. This subspecies reaches up to 7 inches (more than half of which is usually tail) with a pale tan or gray background overlain by several solid or broken stripes running down their backs and sometimes onto the tail. Juveniles sport bright blue tails (as most Plestiodon skinks do), while males may develop orange patches on their jaws on maturity. Typically when encountered they are speedy, disappearing rapidly into nearby cover or down holes (and as such I’ve only gotten a couple in hand to photograph), but if caught they readily break off their tails to wriggle and distract the predator while they escape.

One of my more successful 3D printing projects: Jerry's platforms and ramps. The scaly sausage does seem to like them.

Solomon Islands skink Corucia zebrata

Imagine a creature straight out of a fantastical computer game - this could be the Solomon Islands skink Corucia zebrata , also affectionately known as the monkey-tailed skink. Their silhouette dances between shadows of the jungle in the Solomon Islands archipelago, to the north east of Australia. They are the largest species of skink alive and boast a long, slender body poised elegantly on short, yet robust legs. Their head forms a perfect triangle, housing small, beady and curious looking eyes. This magnificent reptile is now classified as Near Threatened due to rainforest destruction of their home for palm oil, timber and mining.
