#macos' orginal 10.5 time machine's ui is fantastic. i feel a big thing we lost with the wholesale rejection of the craft and artistry of ui skeuomorphism is the idea of *emotional context*
you start time machine when you're fucked, when you're at a very low moment. you're panicking. you're blaming yourself. that fucking document was your future, your whole world, and you fucked it. but you remember time machine.
and everything else falls away. you see a galaxy of stars, letting you feel how small you are in the universe, how small your problems are. you are no longer trapped, you have all the space. and you just travel back in time, grab the thing you want, and then hop back to now, as if it never happened. "there you go”, it says, "there's nothing to worry about. there never was anything to worry about. now you run along.”
the current time machine interface has identical layout from a wireframe perspective. but it has no emotional context. it's a grey software tool.
