On #ThisDayInHistory in 1941, the #MountRushmore monument was completed (more or less). It permanently defaced the #SixGrandfathers mountain, a sacred site for the #Lakota. Its designer, #GutzonBorglum, was a #KKK member who also designed the #StoneMountain #Confederate monument.

@JorisBohnsonPM tangential, but relevant.

"Long before four of the largest faces on Earth were dynamited into the granite edifice of Mount Rushmore, the #Lakota #Sioux saw a different set of portraits: The mountain was known as Tȟuŋkášila Šákpe (the Six Grandfathers)."

So there you have it, and as a granpa myself, it kinda takes my breath away, the disrespect of carving up a native people's mountain, named Six Grandfathers and replace that with a white-washed granite caricature of two men who depended on slaves for their very livelihood, one man who vaunted white supremacism and Abe Lincoln who ceded the west to whites. Sad stuff for heroes on a mountain, smdh

Look at how stupid this looks. Look at it!!

#MountRushmore #indigenous #SixGrandfathers

that mountain was known as Tunkasila Sakpe, the #SixGrandfathers, to the #LakotaSioux—a holy mountain that rises up from the #BlackHills, land they consider sacred.

“The Heart of Everything that Is”

The Black Hills are known to the Lakota as “the heart of everything that is.”

Return Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills to the Lakota!

We call on the federal government to right historical wrongs, and to move our society forward. The United States must return what its own judges admit it has stolen. Return the Black Hills to the Great Sioux Nation. Now is the time.
