I’ve been reading through X-Men from the beginning, and it’s been fascinating to find how the elements that would make the series unique and thematically substantial were essentially already there from the beginning, but very little was done with them for a long time yet. Revisiting early Iron Man stories as a part of my Marvel Silver Age re-read project, I found that between issues 45 and 47 of Tales of Suspense the character went through a systematic revamping. Problems regarding a lack of supporting cast, forgettable villains, and an uninteresting characterization of Tony Stark were all addressed to some extent.
