AoKun's last night in the yard. The ancient farmer that heads the Owl Meet (🦉 ふくろうの会) farmer's market (with a gelato and hot sandwiches stand, and cheese manju section along with other sections...) wanted a rooster for his little fenced of section of 4 Jidori (local heirloom hens). The other section of 13 hens has an upright fighting rooster... So after two recent fails ( 失敗は災害🤣[成功]の元l ) I knew to wait till later after the night got very dark before trying to handle an active rooster. You can see in the photos that AoKun is much more alert and anxious and old-timer Pear snoozing away with his head down secure in his long tenure as kind boss yard bird... After the Free Night school and some food I eased into the bird cage to slowly grab AoKun the young, but full-grown, rooster. There were a few squawks and some vigorous wing flapping but without the expectation that things would go smoothly Ao was under control before the other birds felt the need to join the commotion. Maybe they don't like him, he has been a bit insistend lately and I see him with a beak full of feathers from a hen that refused his advances and got away... It will be interesting to stop by Owl Meet once a week or so and see how the lonely Jidori hens treat him over time... Maybe he'll get mellow with age, or even just because he's in a situation without rivals where the hens might be feeling in need of him to sperm(🤣fertilize) their eggs.

Ao the Silky rooster in his new home with 4 Jidori hens. So far, so good, maybe.
He seemed nervous but crowed when no people.were in his sight. The big strong-looking Jidori rooster on the other side of the separating net didn't seem to notice him at all, much less seem intent on killing him. That's a relief, they tell me the Jidori.birds are fighting birds...

Pear the Rooster sharing loudly crowing while right beside me. I heard that rooster have some way of closing off their ears to protect their ears against the loud noise of their crowing. I wonder if they can drive away snakes or weasels or any predators with delicate eardrums if they notice and intruder and start crowing??

Pear the Silky Rooster and a friendly hen came to help hang the wash.. Well, they tend to congregrate around the barrels that contain their feeds, I guess it's the way they try to remind me it's time to eat, or that they could use a little more today.. I try not to put out too much at one time, we already have dozens of sparrows visiting. Some towns limit the number of chickens citizens are allowed. I just sent 6 eggs along with a family that lives in Kushima. Their kids want to try raising chickens from the egg with an incubator. I thought they wanted a nice group of 5 and was thinking of the timing and the group dynamics... But here they just wanted eggs. Luckily I had a bunch that didn't go over to the neighbors or into my frying pan yet so.. Lucky! Kushima is a 3 hour drive down south. They stopped by on the way home from a camping trip a few hours north in Kumamoto somewhere. But they'll be back to Mimata: when people hear of it they tend to want to learn how Mimata gets all this community stuff working, the Kodomo (Kids or ChiIki Local) Shokudo (Cafeteria) the Free NIght School with the free meal on Tuesday night.. I guess you need a Social Welfare Office that is really good at coordinating things, working with the local grassroots talent and goodwill...

The rooster with the darker coxcomb and the noticeable blue ears was chosen to stud in Kagoshima! He seems a little lonely now that the other 5 roosters in his little age group moved to YamaNoKuchi to be with the lovely family at Lana8 Cafe.

Every couple days this rooster with the interesting 鶏冠 coxcomb has a more impressive voice every couple days. He and his little group of same-sized (about) hens should move on to another home soon. It would be interesting to see if the old rooster can, or will try, to hold his own against an up and coming young buck, but that sort of thing gets too noisy, it can be nerve wracking, distracting, and makes it hard to get stuff done in and around the house.

The cool-looking new rooster started trying to crow a little while ago. It's time for him and his little group of hens to move on to a new home sometime soon. Hopefully they are big enough and together enough to keep the bird-killing feral-cats away..
