COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — While Aug. 31 might be designated as National Mutt Day, dog lovers in the U.S. still have preferences when it comes to certain breeds.

A U.S. News & World Report study analyzed pet insurance data from September 2023 to March 2024 to find the most popular dog breeds across the country and in 25 of the most populous U.S. cities, including Columbus.

Study authors noted that goldendoodles, golden retrievers, and French bulldogs all stood out in their popularity in the states. The three breeds appeared at the top of 20 of the 25 cities examined.

Additionally, while the Chihuahua arrived as the top dog in the country overall, none of the 25 cities put it in the No. 1 spot.

Another interesting outcome was that of all types of poodles, only the toy poodle made it onto the national list.

Five most popular dog breeds in Columbus

1. Golden Retriever (3rd in the U.S.)
2. Rottweiler (24th in the U.S.)
3. Australian Shepherd (18th in the U.S.)
4. Bernese Mountain Dog (did not appear on the U.S. list)
5. Silken Windhound (did not appear on the U.S. list)

Surprisingly, two of the top five dog breeds in Columbus, the Bernese mountain dog and silken windhound, were not on the U.S. top 25 list. Also, the No. 2 and No. 3 breeds in Columbus, the rottweiler and Australian shepherd respectively, appeared low on the national list. Only the golden retriever was nearly as popular across the states as in Columbus.

I am eyeing up just how much it would cost for me to own a dog... It's been a few years, and I want one. My mom owns a Cavalier, but they seem too expensive. Luckily, I can get pet insurance through work. So there is a break somewhere. It's looking to be doable. Just slightly less expensive if I get a Silken Windhound instead.
