Merna Kennedy: Remembering the Silent Film Actress of the 1920s

Merna Kennedy (1908–1944) was a talented American actress known for her contributions to the film industry during the transition from silent films to sound films. She gained fame through her performance in Charlie Chaplin's 1928 film, The Circus, where she played a circus rider and Chaplin's love interest. Kennedy's introduction to Chaplin came through her childhood friend Lita Grey, who later became Chaplin’s second wife. Kennedy's natural charm, expressive facial acting, and stage presence allowed her to shine during a time when silent films demanded highly visual storytelling. Following The Circus, she appeared in several other films, including Broadway (1929) and Lummox (1930). Despite her early success, Kennedy’s career struggled as the film industry evolved, and she retired from acting after marrying the renowned choreographer Busby Berkeley. Tragically, she passed away from a heart attack at just 35 years old. Today, she is remembered as an emblematic figure of 1920s Hollywood glamour, representing both the allure and challenges faced by silent film stars during a rapidly changing entertainment era.

Sound design gets harder when there is no timeline, no layers, no undo, and only two hands working live in front of a crowd.

That is what Kristin Bolstad does.

Kristin performs live #soundeffects for #silentfilms using objects & instruments she has collected over the years. Every move depends on timing, control, and rehearsal.

She also recorded a vintage #cartoon sound pack for us using the same collection.

You'll find Kristin's Cartoon #Foley sound pack in the Soundly Pro Library now.

My 2019 film "Chapter 9" is now on Letterboxd (link to full film down below).

Captured entirely on a 1960s Super 8 film camera, the story centers on the duality of science and faith as a love letter to the dawn of cinema. I worked closely with a very small group of artists (7 of us in total) to bring these ideas to the screen. The film is complete with a wholly original score, hand-painted title cards, and shot on location at Florida state and local parks. The full motion picture is just under 30 minutes in length and can be viewed for free at the link below. I hope you get a chance to see it and enjoi! 🎥
