Zero 7, “Simple Things” 2001

Ah, #Zero7 - I think of the 90s as the #downtempo era, but these guys brought it into the early oughts. Zero 7 is the project of Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker, using different vocalists. They’ve wandered a bit from the downtempo idiom over the years, which is probably why their debut album “Simple Things” featuring #SiaFurler (before she blew up as #Sia) and Sophie Barker remains my favorite.

Can we talk about the track Destiny? That shimmering keyboard opening heralding its arrival makes me literally sit up at attention; then that sliding bass note grabs hold of me at the sternum like prey; the teardrops of keyboard phrases that follow just melt me, grounded by acoustic guitar. Then, meeting that anticipation, Sia pours her honeyed, misshapen vocals over everything, and the sweet, dreamy ride begins. …Yeah, this is one I’m taking to that desert island.
