Trap 2024: oh... M. Night Shyamalan is Back, Baby!

We are living in the most exciting era when it comes to M. Night Shyamalan. The era I would call "A lottery". M. Night started strong. Critical acclaim and commercial success hit him hard, when he was a young film-maker. They were calling him "the next Spielberg". Then doubt possessed his sole. Some critics said something about something he did. And there he went. On a downward spiral towards the bottom. The Happening, The Last Airbender, After Earth... M. Night never truly recovered from this turmoil. He did great films since: The Visit, Split, Knock at the Cabin. But he then made strangely not so great films in between: Glass, Old, the strangely The Happening esque ending of Knock at the Cabin. Going today to an M. Night Shyamalan movie is truly a lottery. You never know what you are gonna get. With Trap we all got a fucking jack-pot!

The Last Airbender (2010) ⭐ 3.9 | Action, Adventure, Family

1h 43m | PG

IMDb

Upon rewatching “Glass”, I’ve concluded that if there’s ever a sequel, it should revolve around the Evil Dr. Staple recruiting Casey Cooke to join “Clover,” and upon conferring with Joseph Dunn and Mrs. Price, Casey decides to join in order to infiltrate its deepest factions and destroy it from the inside. I just can’t figure out the name of the film. Shard? Prism? Cracked? Etched? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Picture this!!!
> He got a #Shyamalan film
> Starred in #RebelRidge and #Krypton
> Voiced young #Mufasa
> Got #MCU's #Blade but left
> Became #GreenLantern
> And now possibly #JamesBond

And this all happened within FOUR YEARS!!!!

What PR agency represents this #AaronPierre???

🎬⚖️ #Servant #AppleTV #Shyamalan #plagio

I finally got around to watching #Oppenheimer. Besides the #nonlinear narrative, my criticisms would be similar to Lauren's as well - incredible technical achievements in producing what appears to be period-authentic scenery, sets, and props, and fantastic visuals, but in service of a somewhat lame, too-Hollywood script.

#Nolan's going to get pegged as a one-trick pony, like #Shyamalan (if he hasn't already...) with the nonlinear #storytelling. You're right that it was totally unnecessary here; this story could have been told start-to-finish and not lost one iota of its message or power. Arguably the opposite.

In Memento, the "two narrative threads with one played backwards" thing was essential to the story. Here the temporal slice-and-dice is a needless distraction, a "Mommy, watch me!" affectation. It detracts from the story.

The cheap #melodrama is annoying too, but it's hard to get worked up about that as long as the "look at what a twisted web I can weave" attitude is there to complain about.
