Day 11 #artAdventCalendar The loggerhead shrike, endemic to North America, is also known as the butcherbird for its carnivorous tendencies and habit of ostentatiously displaying stored prey dramatically impaled on convenient spikes like tree thorns or barbed wire. Its usual prey are insects, amphibians, lizards, small birds or small mammals. 🧵

Most of the day was spent in #Cornwall admiring this rather smart Steppe Grey Shrike. Good views of it hunting, flying, perched up etc. It certainly ate well whilst we were there.

Great company too - Dave B., Dave L., Rob & Steph M., Dave B. (another one).

This is a Northern Shrike. They are not a large bird (smaller than an American Robin) but they are fierce predators and easily take down smaller songbirds by grabbing them up with their feet and then impaling them on a branch or some other sharp object. Sure the name Shrike sounds scary, but I think Shrike the Impaler would be better.
