Everyone in #medfordma who supports upzoning, supports abolishing COSTLY PARKING MANDATES, supports housing abundance -- you all need to show up to City Council Tuesday at 7 p.m.

This is technically Salem Street Corridor rezoning, but it's the first controversial rezoning to happen. And though parking minimums aren't officially on the agenda, they will be soon. City Council needs to hear you are ready to abolish them.

The premise of The High Cost of Free #Parking, Shoup’s 800-page magnum opus, is as simple as it is provocative: car parking is nearly always too cheap.

Estimates vary, but each additional parking space adds as much as $20,000, $50,000, or $80,000 to the cost of a project, based on whether it involves a surface lot, above-ground garage, or below-ground garage, respectively.

So sad to hear of the passing of Donald Shoup, a great mind in economics applying his knowledge to modern planning problems. While I was already drinking urbanism Kool-aid before reading his work, his straightforward approach to parking reform gave rational coherence and simplicity to a problem too many others dressed up in opinion & pseudoscience.
