GULLiver's Nest

Hi, I love gulls, so I try to draw each of the 54 gull species known to mankind (thus far)!

Today: Short-billed gull

As I promised you last time, here are some cool facts about the short-billed gull, who is closely related to the common gull we discussed earlier.

You remember the word "mew"? This species was described as the "short-billed mew gull" in 1831. It used to be classified as a sub-species of the common gull and was only very recently (2021!) classified as its own distinct species due to significant differences in genetics, plumage, morphology, and vocalization - so basically every aspect. :D

The short-billed gull can be found in costal areas and inland wetlands in Alaska and North Canada. They winter along the Pacific coast down to the Sacramento Valley and rarely migrate to eastern North America and East Asia. In 2003, one (1) short-billed gull even found their way to Europe.
