Finally got around to scanning more 4x5's from our Iceland trip. Yes this is another waterfall but I do have a church I'm excited about I'll share soon! And it's definitely not a perfect composition. Despite being graced with this amazing experience where the sun popped out and threw these awesome rays down, there wasn't a single composition from this view where I didn't get the ropes in the shot.

I was trying to go fast to not get in people's way and somehow missed the fact that the ropes were very obviously in the shot. I used my 75mm on this one I'm pretty sure and I think that was the right choice but I should have been better at camera placement. The light didn't give me a lot of time either.

Sharing this one because we all make mistakes, they all can't be gems, the world isn't perfect and neither are we. And you know, even though the waterfall is also wildly blown out in this photo because the sun make the falls shine right past the dynamic range of the slide film (Provia), I still like it. I shot this on color negative (Ektar) too and that one might have a bit more detail in the falls though I haven't scanned that one in yet.

Honestly, the light was so good in this one I don't even really hate the ropes all that much and the photo will remind me of one (of many) magical days on a magical trip.

Spent some time organizing my 4x5 color scanning workflow a bit. I shot so many sheets just trying to organize it all has been a bigger thing than I thought. I'm also testing out switching to single sheet PrintFiles rather than the 4-sheet binder sheets. I think it'll make printing and organizing a bit easier. In the interim, I just started numbering the sheets by scan order and once everything is in, I'll spend a day organizing everything properly and will give all the sheets a file number (which then goes into my negative tracking webapp).

Anyways! This is another from Seydisfjordur. Taken on E100. It's taken me a bit to warm up to E100 in slide but I will say it's very neutral and accurate to what the scene was. I'm glad I spent some time learning it while in Iceland.

*Pours one out for Velvia 50*

I found a little somewhat hidden spot at one of the waterfalls and was somehow fortunate enough I had the whole thing to myself for a while and managed to expose several sheets of film. I'm looking forward to the color version, but quite like like this one too!

It was pretty overcast so this is one of the waterfalls where I ended up with a longer exposure. I recall I also used a bit of rear tilt.

This is why you shoot doubles ;) (See previous post)

As I have there, there is beauty everywhere and that is especially true in Iceland. While an invasive species to Iceland, lupins have some benefits with helping to prevent erosion among other things. Thus the situation is complicated. Nonetheless these plants were very commonly seen during our trip and though invasive, there were still pretty. Apparently, they were brought in from Alaska in 1945. A mere 3 spoonfuls of seeds was all that was brought to produce what we end up seeing today.

I missed a photo opportunity to photograph some gorgeous fields of lupins due to angry birds (arctic terns) but had a few other opportunities to photograph them, such as this one. I took a few photos around this area, which was just a random pull-off. I really liked the colors of the lupins and rocks.

I don't think I quote got the color right, which isn't super surprising. While Ektar is my favorite color negative stock, I find it difficult to convert when shooting in the larger film sizes for whatever reason. This is probably a photo I will try to print on RA4 in the darkroom where I should get the most accurate color since that's how color negative film was meant to be used anyway. Even so, I still like the scan even though it does lean a bit red.

Progress! I'm discovering Silverfast seems to like adding a red cast. Wondering if I need to break down an get an IT8 calibration target. Epson Scan starts more neutral but tends to blow things out too much for post processing work. Once I sorted out how to adjust color levels quickly in Capture One I started getting much better results. This isn't perfect but getting there!

More half-frame fun! Why did I take this photo? Because why not! I found the huge boulder juxtaposed to trash cans looking over the sea with mountains in the distance quite the reflection between nature and hoomanity. Folks eating at the picnic table right next to it probably thought I was weird, but no matter!

As before, shot on my Pen-F with P33 using a yellow filter and developed in 510-Pyro.

Sort of a quick scan but it's one of the frames I will look to print in the darkroom and might benefit from some dodgy/burny tricks but otherwise I'm pretty happy with it.

Showing off some of my own products while finally getting to spend some time in my darkroom making some prints. Here's one I took last summer during our suba diving vacation to Cozumel with @divemasterscuba . Taken with my Nikonos V and shot on the gorgeous (and sadly discontinued) Adox Silervermax film. As the notes show, it was a straight print using a #2 filter. I could have probably burned in the sand on the left up into the tunnel just a little bit though as is I still quite like it. I used @ilfordphoto 's gorgeous FB Classic paper and developed it in Photographer's Formulary 130 with Ilford stop and rapid fix.

I used my own series of accessories (as I usually do) - my 35mm D2 carrier, my D2 filter tray (for Ilford filters), and my brand new Simpleasel for fiber paper (which still needs a clever name). Thanks to @drunk.darkroom for helping me by beta testing the design and offering suggestions. I hope to make this available soon! In the meantime, folks that might be interested can send me a PM for more info on what it is and how it works.

Finally, crossing the streams a bit by using a song off my band (@theband)'s last album, Alien Me, called E.V.O.L.V.E. It makes for good darkroom montage music I think (you can find us on music.victimcache.com).

Scanning and color balancing C-41 taken under the water can be quite the experience so I thought I would share a bit of how much there can be to work with on color negative, especially @kodak Portra 800. While I'm getting better at shooting lower ISO films underwater, it seems like I'm getting the best color correction with Portra 800. Lovely stuff! I wish it was available in sheet sizes but I digress. That has been true in the past and, so far, is true for these rolls too though new time I want to try Aerocolor IV (SantaColor) since it seems to have a red lean that might be favorable underwater.

My first takeaway is the _best_ color I've found for any color negative (above or under water) is from making an RA4 print directly from the film. All the underwater color scuba photos I've printed thus far have indeed had the most natural color rendition. I do plan on making some RA4 prints from the color film I shot over our vacation but am waiting to scan in all the rolls and pick among the best. While RA4 gives me the best color it also takes the most time.

Anyways! Here's two interpretations from the same negative scanned on my Epson V800 using Silverfast with NegaFix set to Portra 800. One has CCR enabled, one does not. But in both cases, I did some further correction in Lightroom. I have found for my GoPro images, using Darktable gave me superior results over at least my old version of Lightroom such that I may look at trying out Darktable for the scuba stuff. Darktable is a phenomenal, incredibly so given it's free, but it is a bit of a hill climb when coming from Lightroom, especially when wanting to make local adjustments. It also doesn't handle multiple catalogs very well but all that might be worth the trade-off.

In terms of what I saw, I would say neither of these are quite right, but the blue one is much closer. The non-blue one is far from reality, but I find it really interesting nonetheless in how far one can remove the blue water cast to produce what it might look like where the water clear.

Testing out my freshly serviced Nikonos V and 15mm lens in prep for an upcoming trip to some glorious blue water with @divemasterssa and friends. Serviced by @narcosis101 who I have used for my year servicing for a few years now. He does great work!

I wanted to also test pushing HP5 to 1600 to see what I might expect. It did fairly well. As expected the water accentuates the grain and doesn't help that Spring Lake wasn't as clear as it can be, but overall I think it's a combination that can work. I plan on taking both color and black and white films on the trip, but was going to try more (pushed) HP5 this time. I might rock some T-Max 100 if it's a bright day and the currents don't seem to be overly crazy but we'll see!

For color I'm bringing Portra 800, Portra 400 and a few rolls of Portra 160 and maybe a roll or two of Ektar. I might bring a slide film just to try too but it'd have to be on a sunny day I think. The currents make using slower speeds more difficult since I don't really have time to measure distance and focus (hence the Portra 800, of which I might try pushing one of the rolls a stop just to see what happens). I'll be using films above-water too (probably bringing my Minolta X-700 for the above water stuffs).
