I am bewildered that these systems have been deployed without an understanding of how and when drivers are distracted, and a complete indifference to how reaction times change with conditions (age, expected or unexpected event, where attention is focused, fatigue, ...)

And I'm bewildered that safety advocates haven't been actively insisting that these issues be addressed.
