I've just completed the first season of #HikariNoOu, and despite the less-than-stellar animation and occasional moments of clunky exposition, I'm actually quite pleased with it. As a general rule, I tend to enjoy #anime based on novels (not light novels but 小説), and I really want to see the second half of #HikariNoOu. It's not quite as fascinating as, say, #ShinSekaiYori or #JuuniKokki (though it does have a vaguely similar vibe), but I honestly think it's worth watching.
Just finished watching another pretty common #horror #anime recommendation recently which is #FromTheNewWorld, or #ShinSekaiYori. I don't know how to talk about this anime without spoiling it, so all I really have to say is don't be fooled by its poster or thumbnails when you look for it online. I expected an anime with typical, schoolkids that happen to be in a post-apocalyptic world, but while the latter is true, it's not at all how you imagine it and the characters are all very well written and not typical at all.

I'd say that it's more of a mystery than horror, but the tone/vibe is rather dark the entire show so it does fit that bill. The characters are also sexually (orientation) diverse which was neat to see and quite rare to see in anime, especially since this came out in 2012. It's slightly difficult to keep up with the story during the start but it's certainly intentional, so as long as you have mild understanding of it, you'll have a really good time learning and uncovering more of the mysteries the further you go. The anime certainly has no shortage of plot twists.

All in all, while not spoiling anything, none of the main characters were boring/irrelevant and that's a rare feat. The lore goes a lot deeper than you might expect. The story also makes you question a lot of things applicable in the real world that you might not have paid much mind to previously. A must watch from me.

Update: I also added
#86EightySix to the list which I've watched sometime ago. It's not tagged as horror, but the story/effect's pretty similar to Shin Sekai Yori so they should be bundled together. Like SSY, 86 also has an amazing OST. If you love one of the two, you'll definitely at least like the other.

I'm still bummed that we have so, so few #horror/#thriller #anime (s) in general and an even tinier portion of that are actually good/haunting. I keep scouring #Reddit for recommendations, and we keep getting the same animes recommended - most of which aren't even scary/disturbing. To this day, I can only say these few are good (and yet only a small number of them are actually scary): - [#CorpseParty](https://thetvdb.com/series/corpse-party-tortured-souls) - it's ok, the original #game's probably scarier. - [#HigurashiWhenTheyCry](https://thetvdb.com/series/when-they-cry-higurashi) - my favourite and actually scary/disturbing, esp the first 3 seasons. - [#HellGirl](https://thetvdb.com/series/hell-girl) - also one of my favourites. not scary at all, but all 4 seasons of it were really good and unique. - [#Shiki](https://thetvdb.com/series/shiki) - not scary, but decent or pretty good. a bit like Higurashi, but darker in tone and not as (favourably) disturbing. - [#JunjiItoManiac](https://thetvdb.com/series/junji-ito-maniac-japanese-tales-of-the-macabre) - some were really good, overall decent. - [#JunjiItoCollection](https://thetvdb.com/series/junji-ito-collection) - likewise with Maniac. - [#MiraiNikki](https://thetvdb.com/series/the-future-diary) - very disturbing, one of my favs. - [#Yamishibai](https://thetvdb.com/series/yami-shibai-japanese-ghost-stories) - really fucking good, some episodes were really scary. has 11 seasons but each episode's only abt ~4 minutes. would love a longer format. - [#HappySugarLife](https://thetvdb.com/series/happy-sugar-life) - a bit like Mirai Nikki, some might find it more disturbing but i didn't. still worth a watch. - [#Mononoke](https://thetvdb.com/series/mononoke) - not necessarily scary, but still belongs to the horror category, with a really unique art style and story. one of the best in this list and a must watch.

Very excited about the upcoming #AkumaKun #anime. I'm a huge fan of Mizuki Shigeru's #manga, and #HakabaKitarou is one of my all-time favorite #anime (possibly even my top favorite, or second only to #ShinSekaiYori). I haven't watched the 1989 #AkumaKun series yet, but I have read... at least five different incarnations of the #manga, I think?
Okay, #HikariNoOu seems awesome, very beautiful and intriguing. As many people have already said, it resembles #ShinSekaiYori a little? Maybe? The setting is post-apocalyptic, with a rural vibe similar to #ShinSekaiYori, though apparently big cities also exist here. Oh, and people can no longer use fire unless they extract it from the bodies of forest monsters. I... think, yeah. Interesting concept.
See, this could be interesting in theory? Anne is actually a very believable protagonist: she's an okay person who grew up in a world of slave owners, and although she's decent enough to understand that it sucks (thanks to her mother), she's ALSO a product of this society, not unlike Saki in #ShinSekaiYori, one of my all-time favorite #anime. Will #SugarAppleFairyTale be just as frank and merciless as #ShinSekaiYori? Good question, I have no idea.
