Sonny Rollins, Way Out West, 1957 on Contemporary
This was the first Rollins album with Ray Brown and Shelly Manne, and the first time he recorded with only bass and drums. I love this cover photo emphasizing the New York native was out west. My copy—direct from Craft Recordings—is the 2009 Original Jazz Classics reissue which was remastered back in 1988 and repressed in 2009. It reproduces the yellow Contemporary labels but with a catalog number OJC-337.https://goatless.org/2026/05/01/sonny-rollins-way-out-west-1957-on-contemporary
4 To Go! by André Previn / Herb Ellis / Shelly Manne / Ray Brown , released on Columbia in 1963.
Review by Scott Yanow
This out-of-print LP (when is Columbia going to start seriously reissuing their Andre Previn jazz dates on CD?) is one of the pianist's strongest. Teamed up with guitarist Herb Ellis, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne, Previn performs six standards (including "No Moon at All," "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" and "Like Someone In Love"), plus an original apiece by each of the musicians. The musicians, all friends, show obvious mutual respect, and despite a lack of rehearsal, the swinging results are generally quite memorable.
Barefoot Adventure is a soundtrack album of music from Bruce Brown's 1961 surf film of the same name. All the music was composed by saxophonist Bud Shank, performed by him with a small jazz combo, and released on the Pacific Jazz label. - Wikipedia
