🐙 Amina al-Sirafi has survived backstabbing rogues, vengeful merchant princes, several husbands, and one actual demon to retire peacefully with her family to a life of piety, motherhood, and absolutely nothing that hints of the supernatural. But when she’s offered a job no bandit could refuse, she jumps at the chance for one final adventure with her old crew that will make her a legend and offers a fortune that will secure her and her family’s future forever. 🐙

An exploration to the different sides of being a woman with a family, the struggle between being a mother (to a daughter you love dearly) and being your own person (seeking adventures you secretly thirst for). I love an older fmc!

The story flowed nicely and there was enough unanswered questions, suspence and scheming to keep me reading. Most of all I enjoyed that the author had taken a refreshing and different approach on the subject of shadow daddies. Amina had weaknesses toward hot men, mut she was well avare of her own flaws.

The supernatural elements were surprisingly a bit too much for me (even tough I knew this was fantasy, and I usually love fantasy 😂🤷‍♀️), especially towards the end of the book. I found the historical notions and cultural references more interesting.

Not sure if I continue on with the series, but I think this works fine as a standalone as well!

I recommend if you like:

@rednikki @[email protected] No, I only got into this since it was on the list of Hugo nominees for best novel in 2024. I didn't know there were other books in the world til today, actually, so thats a treat :) #ShannonChakraborty
Picked up from the library on a @bookstodon #Bookstodon recommendation (h/t @dbsalk ), an adventure story of a badass demon-fighting medieval Islamic pirate who happens to also be a middle aged mum with a bad knee. I never quite bought the characters as belonging to the time period - their voices seemed very modern - but definitely ticks the box as a rollicking good fun piece of wish fulfilment. #ShannonChakraborty #FinishedReading

Review: The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty is a great historical fantasy adventure.

Amina Al-Sirafi is a middle-aged piratey sea captain who is persuaded out of retirement and away from her daughter. What she thinks will be a fact finding and rescue mission to recover the daughter of a former crewman turns into a full scale supernatural adventure.

This book had a lovely, satisfying ending. Open ended with room for more stories, but not in a cliffhanger way.

I got my book from Book of the Month Club and read it in hardcover, as well as listening to the audiobook for some of it.
