Looking through the small mosque at Shah-I-Zinda towards the domes of the necropolis. Samarkand, Uzbekistan. It really bugs me that the door and window above aren’t centered below the arch above it and the shape of the wall...)

Local men visiting a mausoleum in the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. We visited on Friday, the Muslim sabbath, and many people were there to attend the mosque inside the complex. Before and after, many visited the mausoleums of important figures, giving prayers and offerings.

#Samarkand was a major #SilkRoad trading hub for more than 2,500 years. Now, the #Uzbek city has a major new tourism complex.

Wonder if Samarkand aspires to rival or dethrone #Mecca as a #religious travel destination as well:

"Shah-i-Zinda is Samarkand's holiest site," … the giant #necropolis dedicated to Qasim Ibn Abbas, cousin of the Prophet #Muhammad, who was responsible for bringing #Islam to this part of the world in the 7th Century.
