Suspicions of espionage between Hungary and Russia: Orban’s staff in the sights of the EU.
In Brussels, suspicion is growing that Hungary is passing on confidential information to Russia. The Washington Post reports the frequent phone calls between Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, during which he reportedly updated Moscow on discussions within European councils. This is particularly sensitive at a time when the EU is committed to supporting Ukraine in the conflict, imposing sanctions packages on Russia and firmly condemning Putin’s actions.
Szijjarto dismissed the revelations as “lies,” while the European Council retreated behind a “no comment.”
Confirmation from Donald Tusk
The Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, confirmed the suspicions in a post on X, writing: “The fact that Orban’s staff informs Moscow in detail about the meetings of the European Council should not surprise anyone. We have had suspicions about this for a long time. This is one of the reasons I only intervene when strictly necessary and say just enough.”
Working Groups and Leaks
The fear of leaks to Russia is also behind the proliferation of closed working groups among member states in recent months: from the “Big 6” formats for the economy to the “E5” for defense, and the “NB8” which brings together the Baltic and Nordic countries.
Orban’s Veto and Sanctions
The Washington Post’s revelation comes after another European Council meeting marked by Viktor Orban’s opposition to the €90 billion loan to Ukraine, decided last December, despite the intense efforts of European leaders to convince the Hungarian Prime Minister, who is standing for re-election on April 12th. Budapest’s veto is blocking not only the financial package for Kyiv, but also the adoption of the twentieth sanctions package against Moscow.
The Hungarian Issue and the Cohesion of the Union
A matter that further fuels distrust among member states and risks transforming the Hungarian issue into a crucial test for the political cohesion of the Union in the coming months.
