Ms. Que BanhI was having some issues with the man who was doing Mom's taxes today because he wasn't really listening to my questions for clarity. He kept interrupting me, giving answers that I wasn't asking about. I was talking to Mom in Teochew & relaying some of her questions to him too. One Asian woman overheard everything. She came out to help us out & she put the man in his place 🙏
It was a senior tax preparer & she's the office manager too. I found out, serendipitously, that she's a #Gaginang - fellow #Teochew person! Meeting another Teochew person who speaks the language, in Victoria, is like finding a unicorn - it's very rare! The last time I found another Teochew in the public wilds was over 30 years ago!
Mom & I loved talking to her in our mutually shared language. It turns out that she's also a refugee from South Vietnam & her family has some roots near my Mom's village too. Amazing serendipity!
