A review of September 5 (2024)

The sort of clean, technically flawless, economical (just 95 minutes!) movie with a competent script that you would have seen several more of per year from the studios once upon a time. Now they're rare enough that they end up getting put up for Oscars. That makes it sound like I didn't like it. I did like it. I enjoy movies about process, and this one's heavy on process. They've gotta figure out how best to establish a shot of the apartment in the Olympic Village with the cameras they've got, then they've gotta figure out how to get on-site

Back in 1972, the events at the Munich Olympic Games seared themselves into young Sean Penn's mind. Now he's helped to bring the story to the big screen as a producer on "September 5," and he talked about those memories.

I got to see SEPTEMBER 5. Very good, very intense.

Great Peter Sarsgaard, who I’ve missed since Presumed Innocent over the summer. I liked it a lot. #September5Movie

Also cool? It’s only In THEATERS 🍿 1/17.

On the one hand, the movie looks compelling and could complement Spielberg’s Munich released in 2005. I have a soft spot for true-story #journalism films, (The Post, She Said, Spotlight) so this is right up my alley.

On the other hand, the movie’s timing is, um, very unfortunate given that it tackles a bad chapter of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. You can’t help comparing September 5 to October 7.
