When I think about how so many people believe (or at least pretend to believe) that AI and LLMs are sentient and conscious beings interacting with them...
I think of the children's book from 1986 about computers that I read at my local library. I still remember the first page reading:
"Computers are not alive. Computers do not have any feelings."
I think this topic needs to be seriously revisited. We're entering dangerous territory as a species.
#Sentient means the system itself learns to assign a its own values (i.e. "good" or "bad") to inputs. LLM models may be exploited to assign those words to inputs but doing so doesn't exhibit the system has those values.
A thermostat or a LLM isn't sentient, but is classifying inputs as it was built to. All the macrofauna seem to be sapient. If smaller animals seem less than sapient it may be due to the frantic nature of life at that scale, but if the creature can be taught to respond to unfamiliar stimuli to find food or avoid pain in a maze, then perhaps that's a demonstration of sentience.
Sapience requires, I think, being able to run a maze composed of society. You need problem solving, a theory of mind to understand the motivation of others with similar brains, and the setting and intelligent pursuit of strategic goals. I would set that bar so high, not all U.S. Presidents would qualify.

To dobry moment, żeby przypomnieć sobie, że nie jesteśmy na tej planecie sami. Zwierzęta inne niż człowiek nie są zasobem, produktem ani narzędziem do realizacji ludzkich potrzeb. To czujące istoty, które - tak samo jak my - chcą żyć, unikać cierpienia i czuć się bezpiecznie.
A jednak to właśnie działalność człowieka odbiera im te podstawowe prawa. Przemysłowa hodowla zwierząt niszcząca środowisko (zaczynając od zanieczyszczania wód, a kończąc na deforestacji) sprawia, że dziesiątki miliardów zwierząt lądowych oraz niepoliczalne ilości zwierząt wodnych każdego roku przetrzymywane są w warunkach, które trudno nazwać czymkolwiek innym niż systemowym okrucieństwem. Cel jest jeden - śmierć. A wszystko po to, by zaspokoić ludzkie zachcianki.
Dzień Ziemi to nie tylko symboliczna data. To przypomnienie, że nasze codzienne wybory mają realne konsekwencje. Każda decyzja - co jemy, co kupujemy, jak żyjemy - może albo pogłębiać cierpienie, albo je ograniczać.
Możemy być częścią problemu. Albo częścią zmiany. Go Vegan!
