Semipalmated Sandpiper at the golden hour (along with some shellfish appetizers).The sandpipers and plovers were hiding in some shadowy outcroppings of rock along a runnel. Nice of the only semipalmated sandpiper to turn in such a way that I could capture him against the encroaching darkness.

Semipalmated Sandpiper at Avalon Beach

During our day trip down the shore at Avalon Beach, as Bhavna and I wandered the sand, I noticed a small shorebird moving quietly along the beach. The Semipalmated Sandpiper darted across the soft, grainy sand, its brown and white plumage blending effortlessly with the scattered seashells and pebbles. I later identified the bird as a Semipalmated Sandpiper using iNaturalist. It moved quickly on its delicate feet, scurrying along as though searching for something among the tiny bits of debris […]

On Shore

Here are a couple of laughing gulls (Leucophaeus atricilla) and a semipalmated sandpiper (Calidris pusilla) on the shore at Gulfport, Mississippi last Fall.

You know, the photographs that I post here are not quite a vivid as the same photographs that I post at my pixel's gallery, because here, I reduce the size of the photos and usually make a slight reduction in the quality of the photos to make them easier to load.

For some reason this song, performed by The Sandpipers, jumped in my head this morning as I stumbled around the house ... well it is Saturday after all. Hmmm ... they weren't actually performing the song this morning ... I mean they originally performed the song back in the 60s. It was a 1969 movie track song for The Sterile Cuckoo and also release in an album, same name in 1970.

Time to eat.

These are semipalmated sandpipers (Calidris pusilla) ... I think. Unfortunately, they, the camera focused on the two with their tails towards the camera.

"Of the many small sandpipers known as "peeps," the Semipalmated Sandpiper is the most familiar species in eastern North America. Look for this tiny shorebird, barely bigger than a sparrow, at classic coastal migration spots as well as in reliable shorebird patches inland. These small but assertive sandpipers seem to be in constant movement, rapidly pecking for tiny prey on mudflats and endlessly chasing off other "semis" that attempt to feed near them. Their numbers have declined recently, landing the species on the Yellow Watch List." - allaboutbirds.org
