Could we collectively call natural gas what it is? It’s methane, a harmful greenhouse gas. “Natural gas” sounds like a cleaver rebranding, it ultimately comes off as a bit misleading to me. #ClimateChange #ClimateEmegency #ClimateCrisis #SemanticShift #NaturalGasBan #methanegas
I’m listening to an audiobook in which the author refers to “areas that have gone Protestant”. When did the word “go” come to have this transformative meaning? I’ve heard the term “go rogue”, but this tends to strike me as idiomatic. #Linguistics #Etymology #SemanticShift

My recent word interest has been, “research.” I think it’s fascinating that crunchy cult moms watching YouTube videos and clinicians doing peer-reviewed studies both use the same word. I’ve only found this article discussing the #SemanticShift but it’s from 2012. https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2012/11/01/part-iii-the-changing-definition-of-research/ #linguistics #research #language

I was just about to email someone with a 'sketchy plan'. But then remembered my son uses sketchy to mean shady/dodgy (an Americanism?).
Do I now have to avoid sharing sketchy ideas? They could be vague or draft, but in my head they're just sketchy (Brit style) #sketchyidea #kidsthesedays #slang #SemanticShift
