Apparently, the law only matters when it’s not your side cheating.

Trump’s DOJ sues CA for redistricting — but not TX for doing the same thing to benefit him. Add in political prosecutions & selective silence, and we’re watching democracy become a rigged game.

It’s Different When It’s Your Own

Trump’s DOJ sues California for doing what Texas already did—just for the wrong party. Add in retaliatory probes, absent scrutiny of allies, and a toddler’s sense of fairness, and we’re watching de…

IANA lawylawyer but I wonder if #ageverification laws are motivated by the idea that, if nobody actually follows them, the government can use it selectively on people they want to prosecute. Need probable cause for a search? Well they did try to access XXX.com via the free FBI VPN, so they're definitely trying to hide *something*

#selectiveenforcement is apparently a tag that exists

#FireMerrickaGarland, the most inept, weak AG in recent memory. He is so awful, he makes Jeff Sessions look like a "Man of the People." Garland, in addition to #SelectiveEnforcement" also permanently tarnished Joe Biden's legacy. Garland, a pathetic overrated wimp is the #NevilleChamberlain style #appeaser of Coup Plotters and he should lose his law license for dereliction of duty. Imagine if YOU hired a lawyer and he took your money, yet did nothing.

Three reasons Biden is losing his patience with Merrick Garland - Washington Examiner

Tensions between President Joe Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland have continued to escalate following the special counsel report stating that the president has diminished mental faculties. Thanks for the amazing article Melissa.

I rather want a nation of laws ( or a state of laws) and find the following unsettling:

"I discovered that some provisions of Magna Carta still applied in the ACT," he explained.

"My department wanted to repeal them, but I felt that this was unwise and said, 'no'."

#SelectiveEnforcement: the power elite choosing which laws would be ignored.

An approach widespread in Australlia (including Queensland).

The code is written in small, precise handwriting. Next to each number is the name of a corrupt policeman. The handwriting belongs to Jack Herbert (pictured), aka 'The Bagman' — a former Queensland police officer at the centre of a web of cops and crooks.

Okay, so let's remember something really difficult: two or more things can be true at the same time.

1. #Plagiarism is bad. It is deception. It is usually theft. In some cases it's an actual crime. You can plagiarize yourself (e.g.., by lying about the originality of a document). It's bad. If you defend plagiarism, you're either ignorant or have values about dishonesty and theft that I will probably never agree with.

2. Selective enforcement of rules is also a thing, and is also bad. It's a common way, historically, to target an individual or group for abuse or injustice.

I've seen arguments that #ClaudineGay has been the victim of #SelectiveEnforcement, because of her race/ethnicity and/or as part of a right-wing agenda against liberal ideology in higher ed. These arguments are very plausible.

I've also seen arguments that she lied for personal advancement. Having known a bunch of people in positions of power (including university administrators), this is also quite plausible.

Both can be true. One doesn't invalidate the other. They're not mutually exclusive.

These things have some implications, like:

If a person says Claudine Gay did something bad (assuming she's guilty of plagiarism; IDK) and should resign due to achieving her position through academic dishonesty, this does not necessarily mean that person is expressing racism.

If a person says Claudine Gay is the victim of a conservative witch hunt targeting liberals in ivy league administrations, this does not necessarily mean this person doesn't care about academic standards or honesty.

I know a lot of people want certainty, a solid take that wraps this whole situation up with no room for doubt. However, in this situation as in many others, no such take exists here. More than one thing is going on, so more than one thing can be true at the same time.
