“Étretat beach, Porte d'Aval and Needle seen from above the Porte d'Amont”

Surrounded by cliffs, the beach is relatively sheltered from prevailing winds. It is made up of pebbles.

These pebbles are a natural bulwark, necessary to protect the coastline. In fact, they contribute to this protection by acting as a “wave damper”, in the same way as artificial stonework would.

At the top of the cliff stands the stone silhouette of the Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde chapel, protector of fishermen.

“The Porte d'Aval and the Needle of Étretat from the Manneporte”

The Porte d'Aval, a huge flint archway, was carved out by the waves beating against the end of the Aval cliff.

The Needle is a witness to the geological past of the Etretat cliffs. It has become famous the world over, inspiring painters and writers alike.
