The coyote’s back, and he’s here to share a cross that just got a repot and a relocate into the highland tent: Nepenthes ventricosa “red” HC A x naga! Three of the four clones we kept are shown here, matching with Embron’s coat colors and showing the variation that came out of this cross. Clone A for once actually had the best of all traits, being the most vigorous and fattest but also the darkest with a peristome that turns jet black with age. By contrast clone B is slimmer with a cherry red lip and distinct blotches on the pitcher body. Clones C and D are somewhat mini versions of the prior two but with differing shapes. These are all liable to become very large impressive plants over time, and having been in the lowland tent until now also demonstrate how extremely tolerant they are too.
Two seedling siblings of those also still available on the website Shop presently.

My seedgrown Drosera aliciae is displaying a stunning rosette covered in sparkling dew droplets. This South African sundew shows beautiful red and green coloration across its sticky tentacles, creating an almost jewel-like appearance in the sunlight. Growing from seed means each plant develops its own unique characteristics, and this one has formed a particularly dense and colorful trap arrangement that's both beautiful and highly effective at catching small insects.

A trio of complex lowland hybrids that prove a case of my expectations being completely wrong…because they’re from seeds that were fridge-stored for over 18 months before being sent to me to sow. Not many seedlings managed to get past germinating but still. And once repotted they’ve taken off.
Crosses are: N. (rafflesiana “white” x mirabilis) x (orbiculata x ampullaria “red”), (mirabilis x orbiculata) x (orbiculata x ampullaria “red), and most intriguing, x trichocarpa x (bicalcarata x maxima).

After killing the seeds the first time, second attempt has seen success: Manihot esculenta, or Cassava is now well established in the greenhouse!
A shockingly fast growing plant (these are hardly a month old if that) and rather ornamental with those strange leaves, Cassava is a South American native that has established quite a widespread usage worldwide for food. Thick starchy roots are prepared in all sorts of ways from boiled and fried as a potato-like vegetable to ground into flour or processed into that strangely textured but popular food, tapioca.
What’s rather surprising about this though, is that this is not a plant you can safely eat normally; it must be soaked or heavily boiled, because otherwise it is packed full of cyanogens, hydrogen and nitrogen-rich chemicals that when ingested, break down to release hydrogen cyanide. Even just a small amount of raw cassava may well be lethal, so it begs the question: how did people figure out that this toxic root could eventually be processed into food?

This beautiful seedgrown Nepenthes (tenuis x peltata) is developing stunning pitchers with a rich color gradient from yellow to deep red, adorned with intricate speckles. Each seedgrown plant is unique, showing its own color patterns and characteristics inherited from both parent species.

Nepenthes (‘Helen’ x spectabilis PB) HC A x mollis JH, HC A. Growing more striking with every new pitcher, the stripes a very clear standout trait but the peristome also already showing flare influence from spathulata and mollis. I selected four to keep as I usually do, but a couple dozen siblings are also available on the website Shop., waiting for new spaces to spread their roots and take off in.

Nepenthes maxima ‘Lake Poso’ x “Rebecca Soper.”
In general I usually tell people that Nepenthes are not miniature plants, and the few exceptions are usually a pain in the butt to grow (cough cough campanulata cough). However at least among hybrids, there are some true exceptions. This is one of them, for which the vines on the biggest never got much more than 2 feet before either dying back in favor of basals or I just decided to trim them because they took forever to get that long. The rosettes also remain usually under 16 inches in diameter, and though the pitchers here (clones A, B, and C respectively with D not shown) are very small, under strong light they actually gain decent dimensions at up to 5 inches in height. They may overall not be very colorful, but they are shapely, sticky and cylindric with sharply crimped peristome rims.
Thanks to their smaller size, hybrid nature that lends to them being highly adaptable to various humidity and temperature levels, and usually pitcher-heavy habits, once these settle after their repotting and get propagated again they will be among the first things I would recommend to beginners.

Much-needed pot upgrade for Nepenthes (maxima “miniature” x “Miranda”) x clipeata, HC D. This is currently my favorite of the four clones I kept, because of its ridiculously slender traps and very pale, sparsely mottled exterior contrasting with a fairly starkly striped peristome and mottled interior. Jury’s still out on whether these will remain small like their miniaturized parent seems to trend toward in its offspring, or if the clipeata influence will overtake and make giant oblong leaves. So far even the biggest one though remains under a foot across, if only just.

Not the flashiest thing, but this is the first flower I’ve seen open on Linaria aeruginea! Commonly called Roadside Toadflax, this Iberian native is supposedly a cold-hardy perennial so it’ll be finding a planting spot outside next spring, and develops little clumps of stems sporting slender leaves and topped in snapdragon-like flowers. This purple/yellow form is a fairly common color, but the species can come in a vast range of patterns and expressions from white to yellow to red and blotched with brown, yellow, orange, pink, or various other hues. As I have multiple plants from multiple seed origins, there will likely be a big variation once they’re all settled and blooming, and with any luck my fourth attempt at getting their relative Alpine Toadflax to sprout and grow will succeed this time, adding to the variety.

Getting a much-needed repot, Nepenthes x splendiana x mixta clone D.
This cross resulted in some extremely divergent plants, with one mimicking Ruby Alice (if you’re familiar with that Leilani plant you know…), another of similar color but a stockier hunchbacked profile, one extremely slender and pastel-hued individual, and then this plant which looks mostly like x mixta with strong northiana traits shining through, except also distinctly not just that parent showing traits in it. It produces some of the broadest, toughest leaves in the grex too, but has been rootbound and shaded for so long that it’s never gotten to really take off. Hopefully that changes now, and I can get it to vine and bloom before cutting one of the two rosette tips it’s got.
