Sabastian Sawe: How Kenyan broke two-hour barrier to make history at London Marathon

Kenya's Sabastian Sawe on becoming the first person to break the two-hour barrier for the marathon.

BBC Sport

I don't much pay attention to the sport of running. But OMG Jeezus H. Tapdancing Kee-rist did you see what happened at the London Marathon today?

On the women's side, when the day began the world record was held by Tigst Assefa at 2:15:50.

At the marathon:
3rd: Joyciline Jepkosgei, 2:15:55
2nd: Hellen Obiri, 2:15:53
1st: Tigst Assefa broke her own world record at 2:15:41

And on the men's side? Until today, the world record for a recognized marathon was 2:00:35, set by Kelvin Kiptum in 2023. There has been a sub-2-hour effort, (1:59:40 by Eliud Kupchoge in 2019), but that wasn't under official conditions.

Today, Jacob Kiplimo broke that old record with a time of 2:00:28

He came in 3rd.

Yomif Kejelcha, in his first marathon, bested him with a time of 1:59:41. An official, under-two-hour marathon!

But he came in 2nd.

And the winner? Sabastian Sawe, the new world record holder and the first man to break the two hour barrier in an official competition, finished it in 1:59:30.
