The government has launched a consultation on new laws to strengthen protections for thousands of #seafarers working on regular routes between the #UK, France and the Channel Islands. The proposals would extend rights beyond UK territorial waters, including pay equivalent to at least the National Minimum Wage for entire journeys, limits on working hours and guaranteed rest periods.
The measures build on existing seafarer wage legislation and wider employment reforms aimed at improving workplace protections. The #government says the changes are intended to improve pay, safety and working conditions across the sector.
It also confirmed that DFDS, Brittany Ferries and Stena Line have achieved Seafarers’ Charter Status after meeting higher standards on welfare, pay and working conditions. P&O Ferries was found to have met all but one of the charter’s requirements, relating to social welfare provision.
