However, McColl's now better known for a very different reason. In 1901, while he was still playing football, he helped found a chain of newsagents which bore his name: R.S. McColl's. These shops rapidly became a firm favourite with generations of kids throughout Scotland as it was here many went to spend their pocket money on comics and sweets, a fact which quickly earned McColl the nickname of Toffee Bob!

The McColl family burial plot in Cathcart Cemetery in Glasgow. This includes Robert Smith McColl, the only Scottish footballer to score a hat-trick against each of the other home nations in international matches. He also played for Queen's Park, and in his second-last as a footballer in 1912, he scored 6 goals against Port Glasgow Atheltic, a record number of goals in single match by a single player which stands to this day.
