Will ye join us? It will no be the same without ye.

The Tartan Ball, for a very special evening, will be at the Royal York Hotel on 7 February 2026

Which may explain why it sold out so quickly!

Didn't get a ticket before they sold out?

Don't be doubly disappointed by purchasing a ticket from a third party!

The only way to get a ticket now is to join the wait list. Once you join the wait list, if a ticket becomes available, the Convenors will contact you.

If you purchase a ticket from a "scalper", you'll be wasting your money.

Purchased a ticket to the Tartan Ball, but not able to attend?

Contact the Convenors, Laurie McConachie and Sandra Peden, and they will work with you to get your ticket into the hands of someone on the wait list.

For more info, including Laurie's and Sandra's email addresses, go to the Tartan Ball page: https://dancescottish.ca/tartan-ball.html

It occurred to me recently that I don’t think there are any contra dances that feature a set and link figure that's popular in Scottish Country Dance. So I decided to write some!

Set and Link Contras

It occurred to me recently that I don’t think there are any contra dances that feature a set and link figure. This is a figure from Scottish Country Dancing¹ which follows this sequence (for the purpose of this description I assume dancers are in contra dance formation becket, on the side with their partner):

Harris Lapiroff

My plans of becoming an elegant yet deadly assassin are continuing apace-- I learnt last week that the venue that hosts my #ScottishCountryDance class also does #HEMA swordfighting directly beforehand. So this week I turned up for both!

I haven't wielded a sword in about a decade and a half, and I dropped in on the last week of a course, so I was a little scared of embarrassing myself. Especially turning up in skirt and tights when everyone else was in camo trousers and the like! But the movements jumped straight back into my brain. 💃🗡️

I guess Sword Lesbian was always my destiny.
