I just finished my ~4th play through of the TV series Mom (2013). My quick review.

(very mild spoilers)

Mom is one of my favorite post-2000 comedy TV shows. The show follows Christy, an alcoholic in recovery, as she tries to juggle work, raise two kids, and rebuild her messy relationship with her often‑chaotic alcoholic mother, Bonnie. Many alcohol, drug, & sex references, so not kid friendly.

We should track down whomever decided streaming TV apps need to block taking a screenshot. They need to know a couple things:

1) Sharing screenshots generates interest, which means money for streamers & IP holders alike.
2) You know what doesn’t stop me from making a screenshot? Pirated media.

Do you even gain anything from stopping screenshots?

If you are looking for a breezy, easy-to-watch show, Workin' Moms isn't it. This show really leans into tragic comedy at times.

MILD SPOILER MILD SPOILER MILD SPOILER: the abundance of morally ambiguous characters and situations makes it hard to watch at times. Lionel may be the only character I love. More than once, I had to stop watching for a bit because a character or plotline left me upset enough that I needed a break.

I started watching Workin' Moms (2017) this week; I'm about midway through Season 3 now. Very funny from the perspective of several married, working mothers. I would call it a "modern sitcom", meaning it is less formulaic, less laugh-out-loud funny, less punchlines & absurdity, more about the humor (often tragic) in everyday situations and conflicts.

The women's perspective helps keep the show original and interesting.

I started watching Star Trek Enterprise 2 weeks ago as evening wind-down show. Was really enjoying it until "Congenitor" (S2E22).

No matter how you dress it up, Congenitors are slaves.

I found Archer's speech to Trip infuriatingly hypocritical given A's actions in prior episodes. If he'd said "I'm the Captain. You should've asked me first. I make the decision. We can't start war with technologically superior species," I'd accepted that. But he didn't.

I just had an epiphany that Spock, Data, and Seven Of Nine were extremely important characters to explore the ideas of what humanity is in their respective Start Trek franchises. Not sure if I ever realized this before just how each of them help illuminate various aspects of humanity via comparison and contrast.

My favorite thing of watching Monk is when I can shout "I think I've solved the case!" before Adrian Monk does so. About half the time, I'm "wrong", but so what. It's fun.

Compared to other shows, the mysteries here are not too challenging. Well, you know, sometimes I like to sit down with an easy-rated Sudoku or Crossword at the end of a long day. Not everything has to be challenging or pushing my development. 😜

I think Monk may be a spoof/satire of mystery genre. Or maybe it's such a well-constructed mystery that my modern, cynical view sees it as satire.

I don't think there's anything too deep here. This is escapist entertainment: interesting characters, not too much drama, humor, a puzzle to solve.

As a critique, I'll say I'm about 10 episodes in, and I'm already growing weary of Monk's eccentricities going too far, especially when they seem self-contradictory.

Last week, I ran out of TV to watch, did a watchlist deep dive. I've had Monk (2002) queued for over a decade. I've seen parts of episodes over the years, but I guess it didn't appeal enough to give it a try before now.

Took me just 2 episodes to get hooked. It's quirky, but the initial episodes do a good job of on-ramping viewers. That may be why I couldn't get into by just watching random episodes whenever I happened to be someplace with cable TV.
