Based on a suggestion from Guillaume Sescousse, we wanted to use our WhereToPublish database (https://wheretopublish.github.io/) to check the relationship between article processing charges (APCs) and the "prestige" of the journal (measured with the H-index and the Scimago rank) as we expect that, especially for-profit journals, may increase the APCs in the journals with the highest IF not only to compensate for the higher number of submissions that they receive but also to maximize their profits.

Unsurprisingly, there is a strong correlation between APCs and H-index, and between APCs and Scimago rank for both for-profit journals and for non-profit (NP)+university press (UP) journals.

However, when comparing the correlation coefficients between For-profit and NP+UP journals, the tendency always goes in the direction of a higher correlation for journals that are For-Profit, but the difference was statistically significant only for the Scimago Rank (p<0.001) but not for the H-index (z = 0.3055, p-value = 0.3800) confirming that FP journals probably increase the APCs to maximize benefits.

Of course, since what most scientists maximize is the IF, it would be interesting to replicate this analysis replacing H-index and Scimago rank by the IF. I'm expecting that the difference will probably be even greater for journals that are for-profit in comparison with non-profit in that case.

Curious to hear your thoughts on that.

In times when people talk more and more about sovereignty, I was curious to use our WhereToPublish database to explore in which country most journals are based based on their publisher. It comes with no surprise but approximately 53% of all journals (across all life-sciences and including both for-profit and non-profit journals) are either in the UK or in the USA (and even up to 65% if we include Springer Nature (Germany / UK) and Elsevier/Cell Press (Netherlands / USA) in this consideration).

Hey #AcademicFedi I need your opinion on something 🙏

I was recently asked to review on a platform I did not know: https://www.qeios.com

Anyone knows about it? It did not seem too fishy at a glance but their economic model and who is behind it is not entirely clear to me so I'm a bit wary of potential link with people with an agenda (almost got bitten before).
So I'm not sure I want to encourage people to use that can of platform instead of, say, @PeerCommunityIn until I know more about them and the guarantees that all the content will not be lost five years from now...

All opinions, feedbacks, or boosts are welcome 🙂

Qeios - Research you can trust

The Open Science platform reshaping scholarly communication.

Hey academic Fedi,
I'm regularly thinking that it would be useful to have a tool that helps me find articles that cite a paper to contradict (or at least "contrast") its result.

It seems that scite [1] does this but they requires a pretty steep subscription given that I'm not sure how reliable their tool is and that they also advertise a chatbot...

Does anyone know of something similar, or a workaround to achieve something similar using standard scientific search engines?

If you don't know, boosts are also appreciated to help the person who might know see this post 😉

😱 Depuis quand un gouvernement peut-il décider de ce que les scientifiques peuvent ou ne peuvent pas publier??

Since when can governments decide what should be published or not by scientists??

JEOS-RP: Rapid progress in optics and photonics has broadened its application enormously into many branches, including information and communication technology, ...

Here is a question for writers of scientific papers, or others who have to cite sources in their writing. If you have a situation where a person, in this case Alan Bartholomai, who writes a personal communication to an author, in this case Eugene Gaffney, and that author then reproduces the letter in a publication, how does one correctly cite information contained within the letter?
Would it be "(A. Bartholomai pers. comm to Gaffney in Gaffney, 1981)" ?
