How do national policies shape early academic careers?

One thing I’ve been thinking about a lot lately is how #careers get affected by #parenthood (especially for #women ). There’s been a lot written about this in the context of #science and #ScientificCareers but I’m keen to hear more. For example: often people (especially #mothers ) take a break after they’ve had a baby (and they should!). But what are the conditions for this break? Many #PhD programmes (mine included) don’t seem to have policies on #MaternityLeave , let alone #MaternityPay ->
