Beavers could be humans' biggest ally, if we let them

Beavers are having a moment, thanks to the new Pixar movie “Hoppers.” Amid some body-swapping shenanigans, the film is about humans coexisting with wildlife—particularly oversized rodents capable of…

New replication work shows social‑science results remain uneven, even as data sharing improves. What’s striking is the growing reliance on AI—both to produce research text and to evaluate it. Scholars are rightly asking how we trust tools that now shape the studies they assess. #Science #Replication #OpenScience #AI #ResearchIntegrity #ScienceFriday

Why so many studies can’t be replicated

An analysis of thousands of social science studies found that half couldn't be replicated. What's behind this pattern, and can it be fixed?

I'm listening to Science Friday talking about how GLP-1 medications may affect addition.

One of the guests made the point that many people have used alcohol to not feel things that may be troubling their life, and that while GLP-1 may take away the desire to drink, it doesn't treat the underlying problems. Thus GLP-1s may need to be accompanied by something else to help them deal with the feelings they've been avoiding with alcohol.

Auch im 21. Given the current temperature in Glasgow, I figured it's worth posting this plaque I came across on Westbank Quadrant about the origins of Lord Kelvin's ground-breaking research into absolute zero while he was a professor at Glasgow University. None of it is remotely true, but it's an amusing tale nonetheless, and with the current cold snap, it feels quite plausible!

I really like #ScienceFriday, but their website https://www.sciencefriday.com/ is a rant inducing mess!

All I wanted to do was get a link to a podcast episode's page, preferably with a transcript with lots of anchor tags, to share with my brother, but no luck.

They make it so hard to find anything or get a download link, or link to a timestamp. So many podcast links just go to Apple. It is such a frustratingly useless web site. I don't want fancy tiles. I want information.
