Harima wishing life followed comic-book logic might be the most relatable School Rumble moment.

Finished up my rewatch of both seasons of School Rumble, and I'm glad I decided to watch it again. It's still one of my favorite comedies, and I liked it now as much as I did the first time I watched it many years ago.

Sure, the anime leaves some plot threads unresolved when the series ends, but I think the manga covers those. I have everything that was published in print in North America, which goes up to volume 16, and I can't even remember how long ago I read that.

As I was checking that info for this very post, I see the entire series up to the final volume 22 has been released digitally, so if I ever want to read it to the end, I'll have to explore that route.

One of the many things I like about School Rumble is that while there are about 372 characters between the main, secondary, and tertiary cast (yes, that's an exaggeration; I haven't actually counted, but there are a lot of characters), none of them feels tacked on. Some of the second or third tier characters even get featured in an episode here or there, and sometimes even the mains are scarcely seen for a stretch of episodes.

Being able to manage such a large cast without making any of them seem less important is a pretty good accomplishment for the series.

One thing I like about School Rumble is no matter how silly the story may get at times, it never seems out of place in the story's world.

The series takes place in basically the "real world", yet something like having Harima keeping a menagerie of wild animals (including a giraffe and an elephant) hidden at school for a while comes across as completely plausible in the world of School Rumble. Not to mention the various slapstick moments and occasional clear violations of the laws of physics.

It has definitely reminded me of why School Rumble is still one of my favorite comedy series. It seems to get everything balanced just right.

Here's what's next on my anime plate, and both selections will keep me busy well into the summer:

Up first is a rewatch of perhaps my favorite school comedy, a series I haven't watched in probably close to fifteen years... School Rumble! The series has such a fun cast of characters, and masterfully navigates the complicated web of relationships between them all. It's also the series which made me an Ami Koshimizu fan, maybe even more for her role in the seiyuu extra bits than her portrayal of Tenma!

And next up is finally another new series to me, after a long string of rewatches: A Certain Magical Index. I have long been a fan of its spinoff series, A Certain Scientific Railgun, where its lead Mikoto quickly became one of my all-time favorite anime characters. Now I'll finally get a chance to see the series where Railgun came from, and while I'm sure Mikoto won't be as prominent in this series, she'll still be there!
