More than 10,000 books were tossed from the shelves at H.B. Beal Secondary School's library last year. The Thames Valley District School Board said recycling the books was part of a standard review practice, but some librarians and archivists say there are better ways to give books a second life.

My parents had spotty access to schooling so reading was important but not easy for them (smart people but more self-educated than formal).

They were happy that I was a reader and it was pretty normal that my monthly stack of #PublicLibrary books was waist-to-chin high, plus the #SchoolLibrary books I brought home weekly.

I was also encouraged in my addiction by a fairly robust #ScholasticBook order budget -- back when they only sold books.

I've overheard more than one of my kids' friends comment during a wide-eyed first visit, "Wow! Why do you live in a library?"

You don't even have to get rid of copyright entirely to allow this, by the way!

There are set rates if one artist covers another artist's song. Those rates are set by the government and are very low.

There could be similar rates set about printing books, especially in small numbers or by libraries. Maybe it would cost ten cents per book for a library to print their own copy of some piece of classic literature. They'd send those fees to the government and they'd be shared with the publisher.

That's why I focus on "Reform" and not "Elimination" of copyright, because if we only see two extremes, we lose sight of more interesting (and practical) solutions along the way.

If book refreshes at a library concern you because some classic literature will disappear (like it does me!), then the answer is to de-couple the rights of the public to have access to that literature from the profit demands on publishers.

In other words, reform the government sponsored censorship of books that protects the monopolies of publishers and keeps books away from the public- ie reform copyright.

Let anyone print copies of books in either digital or physical form. Then librarians can focus on curating their collections rather than being beholden to the publisher about what they want to print.

Apparently it’s #LibraryShelfieDay so here is our Graphic Novel, Manga, and Picture Book section at work. We’ve grown this collection from a tiny half shelf into the 6 full shelves (plus baskets) of graphic novels, 5 shelves of manga and an overflowing display of picture books.

Under Tennessee’s stricter school library law, some books quietly disappear

Revisions to Tennessee’s school library law have created “chaos and confusion” for librarians, while some districts are preemptively removing titles.
