Il y a des phrases simples qui, lorsqu’on les laisse vraiment descendre en soi, ont le pouvoir de fissurer tout un monde intérieur. « Ce n’est qu’une perception » en fait partie. À première vue, ces mots peuvent sembler presque banals, voire réducteurs. Et pourtant… ils ouvrent une porte immense vers la compréhension de soi, vers l’apaisement, vers une liberté intérieure que beaucoup cherchent sans savoir où regarder.

Chaque jour, nous vivons des situations qui nous bousculent. Une parole mal interprétée. Un regard qui semble juger. Un silence qui fait naître mille scénarios. Très vite, notre mental s’emballe. Il analyse, il compare, il conclut. Et sans même nous en rendre compte, nous ne réagissons plus à la réalité, mais à la perception que nous en avons.

La perception n’est pas la réalité

La réalité est neutre. Elle est ce qu’elle est. Ce sont les faits bruts. La perception, elle, est un filtre. Un filtre façonné par notre histoire, nos blessures, nos croyances, nos peurs, nos attentes. Deux personnes peuvent vivre exactement la même situation et en ressortir avec des ressentis totalement opposés. Pourquoi ? Parce qu’elles ne regardent pas avec les mêmes lunettes.

Quand quelqu’un ne nous rappelle pas, la réalité est simple : le téléphone n’a pas sonné. La perception, elle, peut devenir : « Je ne compte pas », « On m’abandonne », « Je ne suis pas important ». Et à partir de là, la souffrance naît. Non pas de l’événement, mais du sens que nous lui donnons.

Comprendre cela, ce n’est pas nier ce que l’on ressent. Ce n’est pas se dire que l’on exagère ou que l’on devrait être plus fort. C’est au contraire reconnaître que notre ressenti est réel… tout en acceptant qu’il est basé sur une interprétation, pas sur une vérité absolue.

Le piège de l’identification

Le véritable piège, c’est lorsque nous nous identifions totalement à nos perceptions. Nous ne disons plus « j’ai cette pensée », mais « je suis cette pensée ». Nous ne disons plus « je ressens de la peur », mais « je suis quelqu’un de peureux ». À ce moment-là, la perception devient une identité, et l’identité devient une prison.

Beaucoup de mal-être intérieur naît ici. Dans cette confusion entre ce que je ressens à un instant donné et ce que je suis profondément. Une émotion traverse, mais nous la prenons pour une définition de nous-mêmes. Une perception surgit, et nous la prenons pour une certitude.

Se rappeler que ce n’est qu’une perception, c’est créer un espace. Un léger recul. Une respiration intérieure. Dans cet espace, quelque chose se détend. Le mental lâche un peu de contrôle. Le corps se relâche. Et une autre question peut apparaître.

Et si je regardais autrement ?

Changer de perception ne veut pas dire se mentir ou se raconter une histoire positive à tout prix. Il ne s’agit pas de remplacer une perception douloureuse par une perception artificiellement rassurante. Il s’agit d’ouvrir le champ des possibles.

Et si cette parole n’était pas une attaque, mais une maladresse ?
Et si ce silence n’était pas un rejet, mais une fatigue ?
Et si cette situation n’était pas là pour me punir, mais pour me révéler quelque chose ?

Ces questions ne cherchent pas des réponses immédiates. Elles ouvrent. Elles desserrent l’étau. Elles permettent à l’émotion de circuler au lieu de se figer.

Revenir à soi

Lorsque la perception fait mal, le réflexe est souvent de chercher à l’extérieur : comprendre l’autre, changer la situation, obtenir une preuve. Pourtant, le véritable chemin commence à l’intérieur. Observer ce que cette perception vient toucher. Quelle blessure ancienne elle réveille. Quel besoin profond elle met en lumière.

À cet instant, la perception devient un messager. Non plus un ennemi, mais une invitation. Une invitation à écouter ce qui, en soi, demande de la reconnaissance, de la sécurité, de l’amour.

Ce travail intérieur ne consiste pas à effacer les perceptions, mais à les traverser avec conscience. À les accueillir sans s’y perdre. À leur laisser la place d’être là, sans leur donner les clés de toute notre vie.

Une liberté silencieuse

Plus nous intégrons que ce que nous vivons intérieurement est une perception, plus une liberté silencieuse s’installe. Nous cessons peu à peu de réagir automatiquement. Nous répondons avec plus de justesse. Nous devenons moins prisonniers des scénarios mentaux et plus présents à l’instant.

Cette liberté ne fait pas de bruit. Elle ne se voit pas forcément de l’extérieur. Mais elle change tout. Les relations deviennent plus fluides. Les émotions, plus traversables. Les choix, plus alignés.

Et surtout, nous retrouvons un pouvoir oublié : celui de ne plus croire tout ce que notre mental nous raconte.

Et maintenant…

La prochaine fois qu’une situation te bousculera, peut-être qu’une petite voix intérieure pourra murmurer : « Ce n’est qu’une perception. » Non pas pour minimiser ce que tu ressens, mais pour t’offrir un espace. Un espace où une autre lecture est possible. Un espace où tu peux te rencontrer autrement.

Car si une perception peut enfermer… elle peut aussi évoluer. Et si ce que tu prenais pour une vérité était simplement une porte entrouverte vers une compréhension plus profonde de toi-même ?

“The best way to predict the future is to invent it”*…

Dario Amodei, the CEO of AI purveyor Anthropic, has recently published a long (nearly 20,000 word) essay on the risks of artificial intelligence that he fears: Will AI become autonomous (and if so, to what ends)? Will AI be used for destructive pursposes (e.g., war or terrorism)? Will AI allow one or a small number of “actors” (corporations or states) to seize power? Will AI cause economic disruption (mass unemployment, radically-concentrated wealth, disruption in capital flows)? Will AI indirect effects (on our societies and individual lives) be destabilizing? (Perhaps tellingly, he doesn’t explore the prospect of an economic crash on the back of an AI bubble, should one burst– but that might be considered an “indirect effect,” as AI development would likely continue, but in fewer hands [consolidation] and on the heels of destabilizing financial turbulence.)

The essay is worth reading. At the same time, as Matt Levine suggests, we might wonder why pieces like this come not from AI nay-sayers, but from those rushing to build it…

… in fact there seems to be a surprisingly strong positive correlation between noisily worrying about AI and being good at building AI. Probably the three most famous AI worriers in the world are Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, and Elon Musk, who are also the chief executive officers of three of the biggest AI labs; they take time out from their busy schedules of warning about the risks of AI to raise money to build AI faster. And they seem to hire a lot of their best researchers from, you know, worrying-about-AI forums on the internet. You could have different models here too. “Worrying about AI demonstrates the curiosity and epistemic humility and care that make a good AI researcher,” maybe. Or “performatively worrying about AI is actually a perverse form of optimism about the power and imminence of AI, and we want those sorts of optimists.” I don’t know. It’s just a strange little empirical fact about modern workplace culture that I find delightful, though I suppose I’ll regret saying this when the robots enslave us.

Anyway if you run an AI lab and are trying to recruit the best researchers, you might promise them obvious perks like “the smartest colleagues” and “the most access to chips” and “$50 million,” but if you are creative you might promise the less obvious perks like “the most opportunities to raise red flags.” They love that…

In any case, precaution and prudence in the pursuit of AI advances seems wise. But perhaps even more, Tim O’Reilly and Mike Loukides suggest, we’d profit from some disciplined foresight:

The market is betting that AI is an unprecedented technology breakthrough, valuing Sam Altman and Jensen Huang like demigods already astride the world. The slow progress of enterprise AI adoption from pilot to production, however, still suggests at least the possibility of a less earthshaking future. Which is right?

At O’Reilly, we don’t believe in predicting the future. But we do believe you can see signs of the future in the present. Every day, news items land, and if you read them with a kind of soft focus, they slowly add up. Trends are vectors with both a magnitude and a direction, and by watching a series of data points light up those vectors, you can see possible futures taking shape…

For AI in 2026 and beyond, we see two fundamentally different scenarios that have been competing for attention. Nearly every debate about AI, whether about jobs, about investment, about regulation, or about the shape of the economy to come, is really an argument about which of these scenarios is correct…

The future isn’t something that happens to us; it’s something we create. The most robust strategy of all is to stop asking “What will happen?” and start asking “What future do we want to build?”

As Alan Kay once said, “The best way to predict the future is to invent it.” Don’t wait for the AI future to happen to you. Do what you can to shape it. Build the future you want to live in…

Dumb Guys & Big Oxy

I’ve finished up my new adventure for Cepheus Engine. As I mentioned in a previous post, I’m planning on taking some of the more self-contained adventures I’ve created for my current Traveller campaign and releasing them as individual zines.

I designed it to be a quick, slightly silly action scenario. Here’s some design notes:

Art

There isn’t much art in this one. I wanted to keep it cheap, so the cover image is a Creative Commons image from Strega Wolf van den Berg – https://www.stregawolf.art/

The interior has a 3D view of the facility that I designed in TinkerCAD, . For the tower floor plans, I used Affinity Designer.

I wanted to use some of publicly available Traveller geomorphs for the floorplans, but most of them are using Creative Commons Non-Commercial licenses, so I ended up creating my own.

The text is mostly Oregon LDO, which is a free font that’s a close match to Optima, the font used in the original Traveller books.The titles are in Bungee, which is one of Google’s free fonts.

Format

I made it in 8.5″ x 5.5″ size, basically half-US letter size. I made three versions – a regular one with just the pages, a wide version that’s best for screen display, and a booklet version for printing at home.

I’m eventually going to get around to making a print version available in DriveThru.

Handouts

I like games that include handouts to players, so I included a few. There’s a map of the adventure location, pregen character sheets, and list of equipment the players have access to.

I also have a combat sheet for the GM, with all of the stats for NPCs, including check boxes for their health.

Pregens

While this scenario was designed to be plugged into anybody’s campaign, I did want to make it easier for GMs who wanted to run this as a one-shot. So I included 5 pregen characters, supposedly the crew of the starship Loki’s Folly. I also included the contents of their ship’s locker, so the players start out with at least some gear.

What’s Next?

I really enjoyed creating this, and I plan to continue. Here’s a quick preview of the next one:

Making a Not-Awful Adventure

I’ve been running a Traveller campaign for a few years now. My players have been bouncing from world to world having adventures, many of which were of my own design. I thought it’d be fun to take some of the adventures and publish them as separate Cepheus Engine zines. I should have the first one ready to go this month.

As I’ve been assembling the zines, it’s made me think about what I like and don’t like to find in published scenarios, and what I’m going to try to accomplish. Here’s what I’ve got so far:

Plot Up Front

A RPG adventure isn’t an Agatha Christie novel. You shouldn’t have to read it all the way through to the end to find out what’s going on. The very first thing in the scenario should be a short description of the situation. Everything else in the adventure should just be filling in the details.

No Railroads

I’m a big fan of mass transit in the real world, but in RPG scenarios, not so much. My plan is to map out a situation, list the places and people involved, and let the players take it from there. I will, however, suggest how some likely events might play out, and how one might handle some situations.

Bulleted Lists

A lot of adventures can look like walls of text. A GM should read the whole thing before running it, but I can’t be the only GM who’s completely forgotten important details of a scenario at the table.

I think it’s a good idea to have the high points of each section restated with bulleted lists. This reinforces what’s important, and serves to jog a GMs memory at the table. Some of my favorite RPG books have these.

A Bit of Business

I’m going to give every named NPC what actors call “a bit of business”. Essentially a tic, trait, or a behavior that makes them stand out a bit. Hopefully, this makes the characters a bit more memorable. This isn’t a huge backstory, just one little detail players can latch onto.

Example: General Augustus Franko – The head of the local security forces. Wears his dress uniform, festooned with medals, most of which he designed and awarded to himself. Fond of using military terminology he doesn’t actually understand.

Maps

I generally don’t like super-detailed maps, but simple diagrams of locations are a must. I’ll also include a lot of handouts of maps for the players, which reduce confusion and save time.

Pregenerated Characters

My zines are specifically designed to be plugged into an existing Traveller/Cepheus campaign, so technically pregens aren’t necessary, but I want to make it easy to run the adventure as a one shot as well. My plan is to have pregens specifically designed to match each scenario. They’ll be in the zine proper, but there will also be printable character sheets as well.

Combat Sheets

Not many adventures include these. This is a printable sheet with the stats, skills, and equipment for all the possible opponents. The sheet will have check boxes to keep track of the NPCs health. Everything needed to run a combat, or just check a character’s skills should be here. The idea is to avoid wasting time flipping through the book, looking for stuff.

These ideas are all just the stuff that immediately occurs to me. I’d love to hear what other people look for in published adventures.
