On these older, vintage horns like the Conn New Wonder, regulation of the mechanism is done with cork and felt.

@Landsil

Playing a very vintage alto, a Conn New Wonder, I think. Rolled tone holes! Lovely to see folks keeping these machines running.

Awww, shit. But still, 95 years is a good run.

Resetting my mood with some drifting alto work on the patio. Fitting it into the breeze, the sunny afternoon.

Better now.

Some quiet alto work on the back deck. Busy, close interval groups, referring to one another from different points in the horn's range.

On this rainy afternoon, baritone sax in the sheltered area of the patio. The cardinals, who are very feisty right now, were not amused by this raspy loud bird, and came to the dogwood to bark and set things straight about just whose bird feeder it is.

Transition Vamps: Official cover reveal

On the unseen power of the saxophone.

The saxophone's metal slowly warms in your hands, as it takes in your breath. Which, being breath, gives a little moisture to the leather pads. Which swell just a little, sealing more as you play and the horn warms. The initial effort gives way to the decades of time spent in this place; you push in the mouthpiece a little -- altissimo was flat. You begin to work the horn, and your sense of music: what is familiar, what is known, what is new territory?

Prestige re-released "Soultrane" along with "John Coltrane with the Red Garland Trio," as a double album. The cover had a reversed image of John on a straight soprano.

I saw that, must've been 14 years old, and just HAD to have one. But my teacher schemed with my parents and I found myself with a tenor instead. It was about 10 years later that I finally got my hands on a Yamaha YSS-62.

These days I play a curvy; less weight on the old right thumb.
