Politicians, diplomats, and opponents of Nazism were used as a possible commodity for exchange with the Allies. Among them were General Sante Garibaldi, grandson of Giuseppe Garibaldi, and Prince Filippo of Hesse, husband of Mafalda of Savoy, relatives of Colonel of the General Staff von Stauffenberg, who had orchestrated the failed 20 July 1944 attempt on Hitler.
