Ihre Bedeutung als Bestäuber für Biodiversität und Ernährungssicherheit ist für die Menschheit elementar. Die Generalversammlung der Vereinten Nationen hat deshalb den 20. Mai zum World Bee Day erklärt. Damit unterstreicht die Weltgemeinschaft auch die Erkenntnis über den Rückgang der weltweiten Bienenpopulation und die Dringlichkeit ihres Schutzes.
