Scientists found the missing nutrients bees need — Colonies grew 15-fold

Scientists have developed a breakthrough food supplement that could help save honeybees from devastating declines. By engineering yeast to produce six essential sterols found in pollen, researchers provided bees with a nutritionally complete diet that boosted reproduction up to 15-fold. Unlike commercial substitutes that lack key nutrients, this supplement mimics natural pollen’s sterol profile, giving bees the equivalent of a balanced diet.

In case you didn’t know, honeybees are native to Europe. We brought them here. They aren’t “bad,” but they also shouldn’t be our primary concern. We have hundreds of native bee species here in the U.S. and many are tiny or solitary some are BETTER POLLINATORS than European honeybees. Native bees are just way harder to farm and control. #bees #savethepollinators #nativebees

Reminder that, while good intentioned, raising honeybees to save bees is like raising chickens to save birds. Honeybees are farm animals and, as a species, are doing just fine. Many species of native bees, however, could use a hand (in part due to competition with, displacement by, and diseases spread by honeybees). Link below for more info/resource. If you zoom in, you can see one of the several bees that were enjoying lunch (right before it started pouring down)

So happy we planted the lavender that "would never survive there".

My first bee!! (That I’ve witnessed)

It’s hugely satisfying to finally see pollinators using this little pit stop I planted over 2 months ago! 🐝

This hill was overtaken by blackberry brambles when we bought the place. Part of reclaiming it for our fruit orchard is seed bombs of nitrogen-fixing legumes. Bonus: the #bees love it. #savethepollinators
