#SouthBruce staff to prepare report on second #NuclearWaste repository

As runners-up in the #NWMO's first site-selection process, the municipality of South Bruce is uniquely positioned as the organization now seeks a second site to bury nuclear waste deep underground.

Excerpt: "The proposed site faced significant public opposition, including from the Protecting Our Waterways – No Nuclear Waste group. Furthermore, the #SaugeenOjibwayNation, with its traditional territory stretching from the tip of the #BrucePeninsula to south of #Goderich, announced earlier this year that it plans to issue a #moratorium on future nuclear intensification and waste projects if no progress is made on addressing nuclear legacy issues in its territory.

" 'We will enforce this moratorium by all legal and political means necessary until a just and satisfactory resolution is in place,' the letter signed by #Nawash Chief #GregNadjiwon and #Saugeen Chief #ConradRitchie stated. 'Accordingly, the Nuclear Advisory Committee has been directed to pursue the resolution of legacy issues through agreements with Ontario Power Generation (#OPG), the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (#NWMO), other private nuclear operators, as well as the federal and provincial governments.' The sign says Saugeen Beach but a challenge in Canada's top court looms in land dispute | CBC News

The Town of South Bruce Peninsula and two families are trying one last time to keep the land they say they rightfully acquired under the rules and geography of the time. They've filed an appeal with the Supreme Court of Canada in an effort to challenge an Ontario Court of Appeal decision to return the land to Chippewas of Saugeen First Nation.

So this beach on Lake Huron was awarded to Saugeen First Nation after being stolen from them in 1856. They changed the name of the beach from Sauble to Saugeen.

The municipality who stole the land were upset they weren't consulted about it first 😂

After a long legal battle 'Sauble Beach' is now officially 'Saugeen Beach'. It is unceded land, as they call it, which while used by all has never not belonged to the local Indigenous population. Taxpayers left with $4M legal costs ordered paid by various levels of gov't after a losing battle led by locals. The sign has been updated. In the SW Ontario regional news today.

#EagleLakeFirstNation challenges #NWMO in court

By Mike Stimpson, 2 January 2025

EAGLE LAKE – "#EagleLake #FirstNation is challenging the #NuclearWasteManagementOrganization’s site selection in court, and that’s more than welcome news to Neecha Dupuis.

"'I love it,' Dupuis, a member of the #Ojibway Nation of #Saugeen (#SavantLake), said from Ottawa. 'Just pure love.'

"Eagle Lake’s chief 'came and walked with us' in this year’s #WalkAgainstNuclearWaste, she noted.

"'It’s all coming together, like one giant dream catcher,' Dupuis said.

"Dupuis said she doesn’t understand #WabigoonLakeOjibway Nation’s decision to move forward with the NWMO on possibly constructing a deep geological repository, or DGR, for high-level nuclear waste.

"'For them to choose nuclear waste over the land, that doesn’t make sense. It doesn’t make sense at all.'"

*The #Saugeen #FirstPeoples won their lawsuit 👏 Appeals court dismissed #Ontario government's appeal. Justice was finally served.*

Ontario's top court has upheld a lower court's ruling that a strip of #SaubleBeach, a popular Ontario tourist spot, has always belonged to a local #FirstNation.

In a 121-page decision on Monday, the Ontario Court of Appeal dismissed appeals brought by the Municipality of South #BrucePeninsula, the Ontario government, and several local families to the April 2023 ruling by Superior Court Justice Susan Vella.

"Justice was done today," said Saugeen First Nation Chief Conrad Ritchie in a statement, calling it a "powerful moment" for the Saugeen community.

In her 2023 decision, Vella ruled that "Chi-Cmiinh," a roughly two-kilometre strip of beach at the northern end of Saugeen Reserve No. 29, had always belonged to Chippewas of Saugeen First Nation, and that the federal government breached its treaty rights.

The Crown, Vella wrote, failed to protect and preserve the #treaty it signed in 1854, Treaty 72, in which the First Nation and neighbouring #Chippewas of Nawash surrendered Saugeen Peninsula, excluding five #Indigenous reserve territories. One would become #ReserveNo29.
