Thoroughly recommend the upcoming #DaitoRyu #Aikijujutsu seminar in Helsinki (Daito Ryu being the precursor of #aikido and #hapkido). Organised by the #Sasuga dojo, they are one of the few places on the planet that still does this Japanese #jujutsu in the oldschool ways. It's eye-opening practise that benefits whatever martial art you do.

The theme this time is combinations, counter-techniques and randori.

31.1 13:00–, at VMA Helsinki (Vellamonkatu 30).

Daito-ryu aikijujutsu-seminaari: Tekniikoiden kombinaatiot, vastatekniikat ja randori

Event in Helsinki, Finland by Mikko Vallila on Saturday, January 31 2026

Last Saturday the #Sasuga dojo celebrated 30 years of #DaitoRyu Aikijujutsu in Finland (the parent art of #aikido — one of Sasuga's senseis introduced it to the country). An amazing event with people from over the decades, food created by renowned Korean chef Joon, a large trailer sauna, courtesy of #Palosauna, and a special batch of beer made by #HIISI, branded 'Aiki' — with a label design by yours truly.

On the Sunday after I, uhm, did not go to practise...

#Sasuga is putting together a full day seminar on #DaitoRyu #Aikijujutsu (the parent art of #aikido and #hapkido, amongst others) in #Helsinki, 1st Feb. Their seminars have always been very insightful, and they retain some of the oldest teachings of the art. Thoroughly recommend going.

Daito-ryu aikijujutsun seminaari: Perustekniikat ja aiki - jäykistelystä sujuvaan liikkeeseen

Event in Helsinki, Finland by Mikko Vallila on Saturday, February 1 2025

Our sensei, Tom Granström (6th dan), will be one of the many instructors at next month's '#Aikido Across Borders' event in Vantaa (near Helsinki), Finland. Many styles will be present, from soft to #Tenshin style (which #StevenSeagal did). There will also be #DaitoRyu #Aikijujutsu, courtesy of the #Sasuga dojo and #BarawSugbo from the Philippines. A great opportunity to do a whole weekend of the full spectrum of aiki arts.

Aikidoa yli rajojen

Nice to have done some #DaitoRyu #jujutsu for the first time in a couple months. Very traditional style at #Sasuga.
Had a great #DaitoRyu #aikijujutsu practise today at #Sasuga. Been too long since I was last there (busy with many things). But today I got several things working nicely and randori was pretty satisfactory. Something clicked.
@sleepyfox btw the newer Daito Ryu curriculum appears to have changed quite a bit under Tokimune. So people looking for the historical perspective to #aikido by training most lines of #DaitoRyu are probably not getting what they think they want. Very few people teach primarily the old type of curriculum, as outlined also in the Soden books. Possibly only one dojo (#Sasuga in Helsinki). Their stuff is very clearly related to aikido, albeit with a lot that has disappeared from aikido.
