Every year, without fail, my Sarracenia flava is the first to show a flower bud. 🌱 While the pitchers are still just emerging, that round little bud is already pushing up through the sphagnum — a sure sign that the growing season has truly begun. There's something incredibly exciting about spotting that first bud of the year, knowing what's coming next.

Elk jaar opnieuw is mijn Sarracenia flava de eerste die een bloemknop toont. 🌱 Terwijl de bekers nog maar net beginnen uit te komen, duwt dat kleine ronde knopje al omhoog door het veenmos — een zeker teken dat het groeiseizoen echt begonnen is. Er is iets ontzettend fijns aan het spotten van die eerste knop van het jaar, wetende wat er nog gaat komen.

WIP, live from the workshop :)

Testing for the first time a two-color print on my in-progress Sarracenia pitcher plant mezzotint. I don't have the exact final green with me, but it's close enough. I was mostly interested in testing the blending between them, and how the red would fare as it's a color that often shifts on copper. And indeed it's a bit dull, I'll have to try some tricks.

But overall I'm very happy with it! The engraving itself needs more work, to better define details, increase some local contrast, and finish cleaning the remaining parts of the halo. But it's nearly there ^^

Spring pruning time for the Sarracenia collection! 🌿
After winter, it's time to remove all the old pitchers to make room for the fresh new growth. Each plant produces dozens of pitchers throughout the year, and by early spring they've done their job catching insects and providing energy to the plant. Now they're brown and ready to be cut back. I ended up with a full basket of old pitchers - a clear sign of a healthy, productive collection. This annual pruning helps prevent fungal issues and allows sunlight to reach the emerging new growth that will soon unfurl.

Snoeien van de Sarracenia-collectie! 🌿
Na de winter is het tijd om alle oude bekers weg te knippen en plaats te maken voor de verse nieuwe groei. Elke plant produceert tientallen bekers doorheen het jaar, en tegen het vroege voorjaar hebben ze hun werk gedaan door insecten te vangen en energie aan de plant te leveren. Nu zijn ze bruin en klaar om afgeknipt te worden. Ik eindigde met een volle mand oude bekers - een duidelijk teken van een gezonde, productieve collectie. Dit jaarlijkse snoeien helpt schimmelziektes voorkomen en laat zonlicht door tot de ontluikende nieuwe groei die binnenkort zal ontrollen.

I started working on a new mezzotint. I'm going experimental with this one, and when it's finished I plan to print it in two colors inked simultaneously. We'll see if it works 🤞
