The accumulated pain and and cruelty to animals has coalesced into a time entity that uses the family, the environment, and even a mysterious “time crystal” as leverage, forcing Sapphire, Steel, and Silver to find a way to contain it before it breaks loose into the wider timeline.

Although the adventures are untitled and referred to by number, they are also referred to by fan-given names. Assignment 1 is known as “Escape Through a Crack in Time” or “The House that Jack Built.”

Two children, Rob and Helen Jardine, find themselves alone in their isolated old house after their parents vanish during the recitation of nursery rhymes in Helen’s room. Sapphire and Steel arrive as enigmatic agents to investigate a break in time focused on the bedroom, where temporal forces are using old rhymes and objects to let something malevolent intrude, and the pair must contain and imprison this entity before it escapes into the wider world.
