Yesterday, I watched #SansSoleil and got some distance from #Japan before a trip there in September.

I know I'm posting too much on #cinema and especially Chris Marker, but... oh well.

As I watch SANS SOLEIL (1983) I see, for a split second, an image within the image and lo and behold it's Marker himself in his own film shooting with his trusty Beaulieu R-16.

Sublime. Marker's musings on impermanence of human existence & memories narrated by a female narrator are both poetic and thoughtful. 80's Japan takes the center stage as an alien world where a thousand years of time criss-crossing in every street corner, Kilgore Trout style. I finished the film SANS SOLEIL (1983, d. Chris Marker). I've seen it before and it's one of my favorites. Amazing film that often gets called a documentary but is really a film essay of sorts; a kind of meditation on society, time, memory, culture, and the nature of being. Marker was one of the greatest and most enigmatic filmmakers.
